My take on the PiBoy Zero

I've had this idea for a while, but seeing /u/ChaseLambeth Burger King GBC and JohSchneider's Hackaday.io project really inspired me to get the ball rolling. This is the first draft, and will change as I get further into this project. Everything here is made in Fusion360.

Using a 2.5" backup camera LCD as reference for the screen.

Not sure how this will look in finished form.

Buttons will be DIY double shot acrylic. I'll use the CNC to cut the mold cavity into HDPE boards.

HDMI and USB from the RPi Zero

The faceplates, bumper, and buttons will be made in a tiny one car garage with the help of a CNC machine. Wish me luck!

I love it. I want one, please and thank you.

Ports should be on the bottom part of the housing, or somewhere else entirely if you want to fit the button pcb and membranes in there

Good luck man! I hope you are successful in bringing to life this cool idea!

Thank you! I picked up Fusion360 a few months ago and EagleCad a couple of weeks ago, so I still have a bunch to learn.

You have plans for start/select and the bumpers? it is a nice sleek design so far, neat stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love it but wouldn't you need R1 L1 bumpers?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well I mean not NEED need...but need to expand the possible library

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those are definitely going in, it just looked so cool right now I had to share.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also start and select.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Super cool, but you'll need tiny Trump hands to play cpmfortably.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want that

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm making one of those!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uh...yes!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A) aren't zeros hard to get right now? B) holy shit I thought that was real. How do you learn how to make these realistic designs?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A: Microcenter seems to have them quite often, if you live near one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think there's one in the burbs, I'll have to check it out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I knew how to make stuff

This website is great! Thanks so much for sharing!

I recently got a 3d printer and I've been brainstorming on this type of thing. It needs triggers, maybe base it on GBA?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

did you render it in key shot? cos it looks like key shot. and if i had to guess you used solid works.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's all Fusion 360. CAD/CAM + rendering. :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We want updates

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've made some projects using RetroPie, it can be difficult to troubleshoot but please keep at it! Good luck!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will there be L and R bumpers?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Read title as "PipBoy Zero".. scrolling through images thinking "that looks nothing like a PipBoy!"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll take elevntyseven-thousand

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Up voted for the dank SpongeBob reference.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Gimme gimme gimme

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I honestly thought the title said pip boy zero

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude I am literally working on this same idea.but mine has the the controllers slightly slanted and tilted to fit the hands better

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm also working on something raspberry pi related. Just started like yesterday though. I'm not lucky enough to have a CnC machine.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get in touch with a local makerspace. I owe most everything I know to those guys. http://spaces.makerspace.com/makerspace-directory

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its alright. All of the cuts i need to make xan be done with saws that we have here at home.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kickstarter maybe???? I would like one.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Quite a few people have said the same thing. I'm seriously considering it now.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Go for it! Live your dreams!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you don't need kickstarter, just throw up an order page and start the preordering, the bill of materials isn't THAT much.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I MUST HAVE ONE

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not wild about the wood finish but sign me up. I loves me some handhelds. Especially if they have video out! I'm looking at you Nomad!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks promising, but you'll need a longer button pad platform to hold it comfortably and without frustration.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeahhhh that's what we need another different button layout using the same four letters. Make it MORE confusing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uses the SNES format since that's what I mostly use RetroPie for.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this says it all...

9 years ago | Likes 175 Dislikes 1

I would buy one of these.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I'm with this guy @op hurry up and make them I have money to the end of the month.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Imgur community would like to buy them. Make them sell them to us. Hire us. we can all retire as we make our own imgur handheld

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is a personal project for me, but now I'm seriously considering a Kickstarter.

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

I'll take one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You absolutely will have to find a manufacturer for this product if you go KS. Do this well before you consider going that way.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd back it

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd definitely back it and spread the word! Keep us informed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be super careful though, read up on Kickstarter successes/failures, it can drown some people

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You really should. Make your prototype then make a new post on here and link to the Kickstarter with a giveaway or something then profit

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, dude please.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Commenting in case you do a Kickstarter

Not really, I just made a simple site on github, so show some things made in Fusion360. Any recommendations?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So what games may be played on your device? Gb advanced, psp, e.t.c. Good luck on your project op!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you know what you are doing, you can host from Google drive for free. Just Google "website hosting Google drive". Pm me if u need help.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm using github pages so far. Totally free. gb9k.com

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I play Zelda OoT64 on this??

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

n64 doesn't run fullspeed on pi zero as far as i know. the rp2/3 would be your best bet

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's rp2/3? RPi is new to me. I've never worked with any of it. I was more of a "build my own computer" kind of guy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

raspberry pi 2, new one is rp3. Its essentially the same thing as building your own PC, just the hardware is stupid small :p

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh ok. That doesn't sound very complicated.
