I found this Japanese boxwood at a local nursery for $25 and almost screamed with excitement when I started looking through it. I bought the plant immediately.

After cleaning out all the dead leaves and debris, I found a marvelous trunk and branch structure and even potential extra trees.

Upon closer inspection, I saw at least four good branches with their own root systems that could be cut away and made into shohin style (really small) bonsai.

This is where I separated the rooted branches from the parent plant

Here's a shot of the side before I started separating the trees.

I used a bent fork as a rake. I'm first world poor and I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on legit bonsai tools.

I shouldn't have, but I did wire a few of the little ones to train them into the shape I want. The reason I shouldn't have wired them is because the trees can get over stressed. A general rule for bonsai is to limit your work to one insult a year. (Insult, as in pruning, wiring, root trimming, etc. I'm not calling these trees names.)

Mama tree is out of the pot and ready to be heavily insulted like the dirty dirty whore she is.

Using my trusty tree dinglehopper I removed the used up soil and raked out the roots. Boxwood is highly tolerant of most of the insults you throw their way, just don't be a total dick.

After trimming down the roots and separating the two biggest trees, I found yet another smaller tree. That makes six boxwoods for $25. I'm definitely happy with that purchase.

Now that all the trees have left the mother plant, they're ready for potting.

I have so many ideas going through my head on how to style these, but it'll have to wait until next year.

This is the other side of the previous tree. I haven't decided on which side to make the "front" just yet. That'll have to wait until I get them into some proper bonsai pots.

Here's mama in all her glory.

I buried this one a little deep so that roots can develop higher up the trunk.

And here's the whole family. I did put one into a small bonsai pot, even though this is not the right style of pot for this tree. I'll post updates if anyone shows interest. Or I'll just post updates that'll die in usersub. Either way, I'm just happy to share my hobbies with someone.

These are the only tools I used. If you've ever wanted to get into bonsai but have been hesitant because of the price of equipment or trees, don't! Trees can be collected from many places like your own home or even from the side of the road (with permission from your local Department of Transportation or the land owners, of course.) Please, please, please do not be a plant poacher. Or a poacher of any kind. Unless it's poached eggs. Those are tasty little things.

The smallest trees look like they're from a Dr Seuss book!

I once had a bonsai tree. His name was matt bomer. Then a friend got drunk and punted it off my patio. RIP little buddy :(

I really want to acquire my own bonsai tree, but I feel like I'll just let it die, and that tree doesn't deserve that.

love bonsai! bought 6 bonsai last year. all dead within 2 monts. planted 26 seeds, none of them grew. rip bonsai dream.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Starting from seed is difficult and time consuming unless you can live to 150 to enjoy it. Still, I wouldn't give up!

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Impressive, if I looked at it 3 times it would die.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can't guarantee that all of these will survive. I almost killed one of my trees last year because of neglect. A lesson learned.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine isn't doing well because my dad keeps knocking it off the windowsill

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you have any examples of your trees further along the insult path?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not quite yet. I'm only a couple of years into the hobby and most of my trees are under ten years old. The oldest one is a small thuja

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That I dug up from my garden. It's been there for about 17 years. I have a post on it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Righteous... I barely dug up an azalea that was getting too much sun, so hopefully in 20 years it'll look like a proper specimen

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish you the best! I definitely look forward to working on an azalea in the future!

Good find! Japanese boxwood is very insult friendly, and tough to kill.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Local, family owned plant nurseries are a gold mine for decent bonsai material.

I have always wanted to grow bonsai. My wife says I can try when I can keep a spider plant alive for more than 6 months.

My best advice is to do lots of research and watch some videos. I'm constantly watching YouTube for inspiration and advice since I don't

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Know anyone in person who's into bonsai.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I did a little bit of research on bonsai and it looked like a fun “hobby” or interest to do. Can it be frustrating first starting?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Not at all! It's exactly opposite of frustrating. Bonsai takes years and patience. If you are okay with both, you'll do just fine :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh Fabulous find!! You've treated them perfectly!! I'd love updates!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here! That was really cool to read. Heck, wondering if I should give it a go sometime (after thorough research ofc)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too, me too :) I recently repotted my bonsai as well.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well done OP. Don’t garden expensive, garden clever

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, tag me too. I've been given a young bux bonsai and want to keep it alive. Already insulted once by planting into a bonsai pot.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best of luck. I was given a tree once and knew nothing about bonsai. I got it repotted and was told to put it outside. Poor tree hated that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would be interested too. What about a post of bonsai basics if you ever have time. I'm sure lots of people would be interested!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sounds like a good idea to me. I'll tag you when the post is up.
