FUN FACT: Reeves based the Clark Kent side of his character on the character played by Carey Grant in the 1938 comedy, Bringing Up Baby. That is all. As you were.
It wasn't just Christopher Reeve acting this out, the character he was portraying was doing the same acting. Christopher Reeve acting as Superman acting as Clark Kent. Or as they say in the business, Reeve was the Dude, Playing A Dude, Disguised As Another Dude.
In Superman 3, Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) created synthetic kryptonite, but the computer couldn't identify one element, so he used tar a a filler, and then presented it to Superman as some sort of award while pretending to be some army guy. And it turned Superman into Drunk Superman. And yes, both played by Reeve in the movie.
Not only that, but nobody else will ever come remotely close to pulling off Clark Kent like he did. Almost anyone can be Superman, but only a true legend can pull off Clark Kent.
My late father showed me this when I was a little kid. He said "Pay attention to him. It's not just the glasses. He changes everything about himself in the blink of an eye.". It's brilliant.
I've been thinking along this line looking at the comments about how great Reeves is for pulling this off but I wonder how many "regular" or "little" people could become "super" doing the same thing.
Can’t remember where I heard this but someone once said most superheroes have to put on a costume to be the hero but Superman has to put on a costume to not be Superman
Superman 3, after Richard Pryor gave Supes synthetic kryptonite. The computer he used to make it couldn't identify one element, so he used tar as a filler, which turned Supes into Drunk Superman instead of killing him.
I get what they’re saying, but if you met them both you’s at least think they were twins, because they clearly have the same face. Tatiana Maslany wearing different wigs, on the other hand….
It was actually at the tail end of the prior superhero boom. Batman + Returns + Forever (+ and Robin?), Spawn, Blade, Steel, The Shadow, Judge Dredd, The Rocketeer, The Phantom, and probably more I'm forgetting.
Last Action Hero was a genuinely great and intelligent film. Schwarzenegger also put a lot of faith into it, from what I understand, and felt it was going to be great. It's a shame that and Mystery Men generally fell into obscurity.
I remember watching Last Action Hero as a kid and thinking it was pretty weak. Watched it again recently and was blown away. Easily the most meta movie I've ever seen
That scene, just truly masterclass acting. No special effects, no fancy CG transformation, just pure acting and you can see him transform from Clark to Supes in a few seconds. It's amazing.
In my top 3 favourite movie scenes of all time. Flying away as superman and soon as Lois’s back is turned he’s knockin on her door as Clark. Then THAT scene. *Chefs kiss!*
Corridor Crew tested it out, and found it does indeed work, but yeah it turns out you have to be good at acting :) the better you are the more you can fly under the radar https://youtu.be/sFANdxfirvI
They proved it again on Smallville with a woman in glasses and subdued personality working for Lex who turns out to be the baddie with an outfit change, losing the glasses, and living out the American dream by trying to kill her boss.
There is a passage attributed to James Bond actor Roger Moore, which states he saw this firsthand. The story goes that Superman was being filmed at the same studio as a Bond film. Whenever he saw Christopher Reeve in his Superman costume, the women took notice, unable to keep their eyes off him. But if he was dressed as Clark Kent, he seemed nearly invisible to those same women.
Speaking from 1st hand experience, whenever I take off my glasses and show up somewhere wearing tights and a cape, all my friends act like they have no clue who I am.
To be fair, especially at that time, most people would stare more at the guy walking down the street in tights, a cape, go-go boots, and with his underwear on the outside than they would at a guy in a suit, regardless of how good looking either one was.

It's like Mel Blanc voicing Bugs Bunny's impersonation of Daffy Duck instead of just doing Daffy's voice, and vice versa.

Just like Batman and Bruce.

Reeve was amazing in those roles. He did it better than I think anyone else could have.

How about an explanation for the evil Superman vs Clark? Both Christopher Reeves?

Probably the best example of good acting possible. Most actors these days have a character designed for them rather than them become the character.

I think Tyler Hoechlin's excellent and Henry Cavill could've done it, if the writing/directing had aligned to make him Superman.

George Reeves fans in shambles.

I was going to say, "not as much as George himeself", but maybe that's a little too dark?

Tatiana Maslany playing like eight different people, and occasionally one of those people pretending to be a different one of them, is great.

I would argue that it was ahead of its time in terms of meta commentary. Nowadays, this film would be a major hit. See also: Last Action Hero

While there aren't any special effects or CG, he is helped by a little bit of John Williams...
3PiecesOfBread
It's mind blowing when you really think about how much less impactful movies like this, Star Wars, Indy, etc. would be without John Williams' music.
Anonymouse64
He really did make us believe a man could fly.

Henry Cavil failed at this as he seems unable to turn off Superman mode.

Isn't there a pic of him wearing a Superman shirt in public, under the billboard for the movie, and still no one recognized him?

Maybe, but he sure didn't look like Clark Kent.
