Some websites I’ve tried to create a profile on won’t accept that my zip code starts with 0. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know Boston is 02134 because as a kid I watched Zoom on TV.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Whenever I'm signing up to an American website I just write 90210. Its the only one I know

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So a zip code is basically the legal requirements of how many zips on your clothing you must have at any given time?

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

Yep.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always thought that, just didnt want to sound stupid asking such an obvious question. Thanks for clearing that up.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

90210

I have lived in 3 different sections of kentucky and had a 4xxxx zip code in all 3.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

exactly

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That....is because all of Kentucky uses 4- codes.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Derp i confused Tennessee with Kentucky lol :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This could be a good spot to get into stereotypes, but I'll refrain for now.

Post codes over hre will tell someone EXACTLY WHAT STREET YOU'RE ON. One more number and they know where you live.

Can someone explain why NJ is lumped in with New England states with 0XXXX and not Mid-Atlantic states with 1XXXX?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

12345 is Schenectady New York

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was gonna to state this fact, I'm close to schenectady

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i am not, but i used to work in the shipping area of a magazine print shop years ago. just something that stuck.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

92618!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My zip code growing up was 23456... out of state no one would ever believe me

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pennsylvania has 5’s and 6’s

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as someone who has lived in 3 of them, this seems logical

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Iowa, 52405 here, I had no idea the 5xxxx went that far west.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The UK uses an alphanumeric code that identifies an area down to a *handful* of properties. SW14 4DJ for example.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So do you still have to fully address an envelope?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In theory you could stick a house/flat number and a postcode and it'd get there. But it's better to use the full address, just in case >>

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

>> the postcode covers a tiny bit of two different streets (which is pretty unlikely, but possible). Some government departments you just >>

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

>> need the department name and a postcode. The DVLA (think US DMV) is just: DVLA, SA99 1BN. It'll get there.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As does Canada

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One used to belong to the other, today they still have the person for queen

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She's on our Monopoly money

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well , she is your queen

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: if you are Canadian, and are asked for a zip code (gas pump, ATM, etc), use the three numbers of your postal code plus 00.

7 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 2

Why do you even need a zipcode for gas pumps in the US?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Security, as they haven't widely adopted chip+PIN as Canada and Europe has.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This has left me wondering before. Bad websites that put Canada on form but won't submit without zipcode. Thank you!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I added a 0 to my. 4-digit swiss postal code. Netflix now believes I'm american. Saves me about 5$ a month.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait, the first 3 or the second set?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Numbers not letters postal codes are numbers and letters 6 total use numbers only plus 00 at the end is as how I understand this

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That makes sense.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are only three numbers in a Canadian postal code, so all of them. The format is A#A #A#.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or just use 90210.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to do this for Pandora before they got a court order to actually check IPs. However, be careful, as if you're matching a credit 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

card and a zip code, often they check the billing address to catch fraud. So that can bounce, or even lock your account. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess I should've explained that I'm not from the USA.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right. I am Canadian. Using an incorrect zip code that way, matched with a Canadian credit card, can trigger fraud detection on your card.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do they do this? Why does the gas station need to know where I live? (I'm Canadian and don't understand how the US works)

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The US, unlike the rest of the Western world, has not adopted chip+PIN widely. The billing address is used as a work around for anti-fraud.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

eg: lets say the billing address of your credit card is postal code M5J 1E3. US machines will accept 51300 as a valid zip code.

What about Holtsville NY 00501

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

I live there we use 11742

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmm, they must be adding zip codes. There never used to be 00 zips now it seems there are two. So Portsmouth, NH is lowest

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Puerto Rico Zip Codes have 00 from the start of the program

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d be interested in buying a coffee table book about zip codes leaving it out so people think I’m well versed in obscure stuff/ interesting

What's with all the white area? No zip codes there?

7 years ago | Likes 779 Dislikes 17

That little part at the New Mexico/Texas border overlaps

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not enough population density to justify home postal delivery maybe? They would all need to use PO Boxes.

I live within 10 miles of several of these remote locations. There is really no one even living in those white areas, xcept crazy hippies

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In northern Utah anyways

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No people there.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the neutral zone

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mountains. Uninhabitable areas, maybe.

7 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 6

That was my first guess too

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

From what I know of my own state (WA), uninhabited.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't like to talk about them

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's an impenetrable wall of swine.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

National parks/ federal land?

7 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 5

Yes

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don’t think so I don’t see many big parks on there

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Yeah you're right. Maybe just fed land then?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nope, check the tip of Minnesota which is not fed land. They did try to join Canada years ago. Bemidji is in the lower white too I think.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, some military bases out west are blanked out on maps.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Military bases have there own zip codes that start with the corresponding number of the area

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Towers of swine.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Explained in the source : https://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/ they're regions without assigned ZIP codes.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Uninhabited / republican areas.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Subconsciously it just registered as clouds in my mind, until I read your post and realized maps normally don't include weather...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my guess is federal owned land that can't be mailed to maybe? though i do see the Red Lake Res, and most of Nevada would be white...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if that was truely the case.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't feel so good.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's Canada.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure those are federal lands, mainly BLM, with Wilderness or other non-habitation designations. I recognize areas where I mapped....

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Somebody spilled coke on the map....

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Found a like minded individual. Happy thanksgetting!!!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But coca cola is dark colored

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some are public land and or military installations. Nevada for example

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Military installations use local Zip codes. Only OCONUS bases use the APO/APE system.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Don't get me started on those fuckers.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would guess so. Middle of Nevada is a whole lot of nothing

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the white spots might have a Crip Code.
