If her cat wasnt gone long its likely that she had her cats scent on her as well as distress and since cats commune in their own ways my very unscientific hypothesis would be that the strays smell her cat, then find that cat and "tell" it that its pet is sad looking for them.
I heard cats can actually understand us. They’re just assholes. Of course the study was said that one cat actually fell asleep mid-test and I’m like “you’re telling me you didn’t have a specific box for the ‘cat falls asleep’ category? It’s a cat. Always assume it will nap.”
There's been a few studies like that. The latest and most likely idea is they don't understand the words quite as good, except for often used one like no, their name, treat. Instead when talking to them they understand tone more.
I just spent the last 3 minutes thinking about the realistic linguistics between these cats that could happen to communicate this…. Which is a little silly but, upon recognizing the lost kitty, their words would be “your human sad”
the song well predates the Muppets but trivia: that skit was one of the few that had Gaffer the Backstage Cat as a character (Generally Gaffer is in the background and is basically a training muppet for new cast members to practice on)
Not shitting on this feel good but I dont think the woman is speaking Japanese. I mean I barely speak English so im not the best reference. Also idk that it matters for the context either bc its only stupid if it doesn't work right?
My s/o and i feed the strays here (there's not many & they're pretty well off) and one brought me a fresh sandwich one day. Still dunno where she got it but she's my cat now

Whenever I was on vacation away from my cat I'd ask any stray to ask King Tybalt to let my cat know I missed him and was coming home soon

Set the cat litter box outside. They'll return to it.

CAT COUNCIL: There's a lady being weird in the streets with a glowy rectangle.
CAT WHO JOINED COUNCIL JUST RECENTLY: Okay fine, I'll go home.

Reminds me of a Muppets song. "The cat came back, the very next day. The cat came back, he wouldn't stay away..."

What language does she speak? It's not Japanese, is it?
InitHello
I'm almost certain it's not Japanese.

It didn't really sound like Japanese to me, but the post didn't actually say she was. It just spoke of Japanese folklore.

I mean true

It's true! Cats do gossip

Cats notoriously do not like rats!

Cats are very much social creatures, im not sure that the correlation points towards causation here, but im glad she got her cat back.
MithridateEupator
It's probably mostly that cats just come back after a while.
DancingSwine
Maybe her cat was able to pick up her sent from the cats who rubbed on her phone ?
iDrawStuff
I don't care. I love cats. I'm riding the correlation > causation train in this instance for a far as it will take me.
cousteau
Yeah there's a distinct chance that the cat just went for a hike or a mini adventure and got back when it got bored/hungry.
LostCaterpillar
Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back.
