Saga
by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples
This is on the list because I suppose it has to be. While I no longer believe this is the best comic evarrr. It is the absolute best to start with. Brian K Vaughn is a master writer, pushing boundaries with his ideas. Staples' artwork is immersive and full of life. Lovely and sentimental.
From Image :
Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples, published monthly by Image Comics. The series is heavily influenced by Star Wars, and based on ideas Vaughan conceived both as a child and as a parent. It depicts two lovers from long-warring extraterrestrial races, Alana and Marko, fleeing authorities from both sides of a galactic war as they struggle to care for their newborn daughter, Hazel, who occasionally narrates the series.

Wayward
Another spin on the anime favourite theme of yokai ; Japanese spirits and demons. Really gorgeous artwork and lovely creatures. A violent Ghibli-esque read.
From Image:
"Bleeding Cool Rori Lane is trying to start a new life when she reunites with her mother in Japan, but ancient creatures lurking in the shadows of Tokyo sense something hidden deep within her, threatening everything she holds dear. Can Rori unlock the secrets of her power before it's too late? JIM ZUB (SKULLKICKERS, Samurai Jack) and STEVE CUMMINGS (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot) team-up to create an all-new Image supernatural spectacle that combines the camaraderie and emotion of Buffy with the action and mystery of Hellboy."
Peoples of the internet say it's the next Saga. A good starter for those who aren't really into comics.

Paper Girls
by Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, Matthew Wilson
If you liked Stranger Things, you'll love Paper Girls. It's a rad 80s revival kind of story with beautiful artwork and amazing retro colouring. another Brian K Vaughn masterpiece.

Pretty Deadly
by Kelly-Sue DeConnick & Emma Rios
Beautiful, intricate inking. Lovely colouring. Every page is a piece of art. The story is well put together, with everything coming together very poetically at the end. The characters are rich and give you many many feels. You'll reread it again and again.
From Image's Site :
"KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (Avengers Assemble, Captain Marvel) and EMMA RÍOS (Dr. Strange, Osborn) present the collected opening arc of their surprise-hit series that marries the magical realism of Sandman with the western brutality of Preacher. Death's daughter rides the wind on a horse made of smoke and her face bears the skull marks of her father. Her origin story is a tale of retribution as beautifully lush as it is unflinchingly savage."
Volume 2 has just been released!

Apocalyptigirl : an aria for the end times
by Andrew Maclean
Quirky, fun, lovely sense of humour. Aria is lighthearted, but has a message. Don't be overly critical with this one. It's a fun, sweet read with wonderful artwork.
From Darkhorse :
Alone at the end of the world, Aria is a woman with a mission! As she traipses through an overgrown city with a cat named Jelly Beans, Aria is on a fruitless search for an ancient relic with immeasurable power. But when a creepy savage sets her on a path to complete her quest, she’ll face death in the hopes of claiming her prize.
* The premiere graphic novel from underground sensation Andrew MacLean (Head Lopper)!
* Headlopper looks amazing too. I haven't been able to get it yet.

The Divine
by Boaz Lavie, Tomer & Asaf Hanuka
Really fucking amazing saturated artwork. This story disappointed me a liiiiittle but after reading up on it, the history is pretty cool. It's a weird but totally seamless blend of natural and fantasy worlds.
Goodreads :
From world-renowned artists Asaf and Tomer Hanuka (twins, whose magic powers are strictly confined to pen and paper) and Boaz Lavie, The Divine is a fast-paced, brutal, and breathlessly beautiful portrait of a world where ancient powers vie with modern warfare and nobody escapes unscathed.

Halogen
by Afuchan & Josh Tierney
I'm a major Afuchan fangirl. I really like the art so this one may be a biased pick. The story is captivating and the characters are unexpected.
From Boom!Studio's site :
There’s a rumor on Cityship Q that the gigantic body of a dead god was found floating in space. Rell, an agent woking for the HaloGen organization, is tasked with finding the location of the god and retrieving it by any means necessary. Using her ability to form hyper-realistic holograms, Rell is about to take on the first mission she might not be able to finish.
Having first collaborated on the Eisner Award-nominated Spera series, the creative team behind HaloGen is no stranger to kick-butt ladies, epic world-building, and sweeping adventures. This time they’re strapping on their sci-fi boots for a series perfect for fans of Prophet, Rocket Girl, and The Fifth Element.

Mezolith
by Ben Haggarty & Adam Brockbank
Rich and detailed artwork. Wonderful creatures & characters. Beautiful coming of age story, dedicated to the author's son. All the dads out there need to read this.
From Haggarty's site :
Ben Haggarty’s debut graphic novel series, Mezolith, is an extraordinary exploration of the archaeology of the imagination. This cycle of stone-age stories of magic, horror, enchantment, & families, is written in words and pictures by Ben, with beautiful illustrations by Adam Brockbank (concept artist for X-men, Troy & the Harry Potter film series). Set 10,000 years ago, before Britain was an island, it plays with the stories our ancestors might have shared.
A lovely review on Goodreads :
"It's hard sometimes to review something which wholly and completely leaves you breathless. Mezolith is that something. "
Volume 2 is coming soon!

Ody-C
by Matt Fraction & Christain Ward
-dies- This is the most beautiful thing in the whole world. -not actually dead-
Ody-C is a little wild, so leave it til last, for when your storytelling brain muscles are ready to get fucked up by pure coolness. Also, if queerness bugs you, (you're probably a dick'ed) proceed with caution. Gender ain't no thing off in Far Off Ithicaa. I only just realised today that the spaceship is a pair of ovaries. Wut. That's the best.
From Image :
An epic 26 centuries in the making: In the aftermath of a galactic war a hundred years long, Odyssia the Clever Champion and her compatriots begin their longest, strangest trip yet: the one home. A gender-bent eye-popping psychedelic science fiction version of Homer's Odyssey. MATT FRACTION (CASANOVA, SEX CRIMINALS, SATELLITE SAM) and CHRISTIAN WARD (INFINITE VACATION, OLYMPUS).

East of West
by Jonathan Hickman & Nick Dragotta
A little heavy in the beginning due to the sheer density of lore and storytelling. It's really really well thought out. Truly magnificent. My all time favourite. READ IT.
From Image:
This is the world. It is not the one we wanted, but it is the one we deserved. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse roam the Earth, signaling the End Times for humanity, and our best hope for life, lies in DEATH.

As much as I love Fraction, and that is A LOT, I bounced off ODY-C fairly quickly. Beautiful art, though.

purple0king
Great to see a Pretty Deadly shout out.
PantherLady
It's so refreshing to see a list like this devoid of DC or Marvel.
YourWaifuIsTrash
DC and Marvel have been (mostly) cranking out the same stuff for the diehard fans, while Image has pulled a 180 from its cringey 90's shit >
YourWaifuIsTrash
and become the king of excellent comic series. Saga, Black Science, Low, East of West... they make a TON of creative, original stories now.

I have trust issues because of Brian K Vaughn after reading Y:the last man and Pride of Baghdad. But he's an amazing writer. 13/10would read
TheWorldEndsWithYou
his runaways run made me love his work and that's one of his older series
Sarahwhatever
Shame Baghdad was 2006. He's defs getting better and better. As a writer, it must be shitty to have your old bleh work still in circulation.
DarmokAndJaIadAtTanagra
i'll join you on the BKV trust issue train, although finishing Ex Machina did a lot more to fuel my issues with him than Y:TLM. ughhhhhhh.
BlackZao
To add on here: Low, Black Science, and Manifest Destiny are all amazing.
