god now I wish I got random texts because pretending to be a spy sounds great

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They *are* fun. Here's one I got not long ago.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And another.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would love to do this but have a feeling it would just lead to more and more SPAM texts.

Don't betray Emily. They'll kill you too even if you give up her location. Emily's out in the cold now.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Maybe we can bring her in

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not before the mission is done

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They know what you've done are and are coming for you. You need to get up and calmly walk to the bathroom. Keep going. If you go now you should be able to get away.

Emily is a double agent...

I sincerely hope so

Next blind text I get, I'm replying with this

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How is the Picasso one supposed to work as phishing?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do the same. Just told one the other day that I'm running out of places to hide the bodies then asked for advice on how to remove blood from fabrics. Like, a lot of blood.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

You don't, burn barrel.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I tell them they've signed up for my knock knock joke of the day (stole from a guy who did the same with bible quote of the day), it costs $0.75 per day, and they cannot unsubscribe for the first month.

I've been doing this for years. After I got my first shitty credit card years ago, offers just flooded into my snail mailbox daily for super high interest credit cards. I had a lot of fun with those. Postage paid return love letters letting them know what I thought about their 27.99% APR offer. Some human had to open every one.

Mail back road side gravel.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I did one with a foreign scammer who used google translate or some equivalent. I started gradually substituting words to nonsensical alternatives in the normal flow of my responses. First just a few, then more and more. Oh man, the _struggle_

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Another great idea

One of the highlights of my life was getting the blind text:
“Hi, is this Dave?”
and getting to reply:
“Dave’s not here, man.”

That is the ultimate

"The Phoenix is flying in reverse. Tell the Nightingale that Leicester Square is showcasing Jazz only. Springtime for the Weimar Republic. Four candles. Repeat FOUR candles."

This is brilliant. Gives me great ideas

I was once getting a call from the same unknown number again and again. After the 4th time, I used the bit I read somewhere on the Internet: picked up, and said in a rushed whisper

"Job's done, but there's a lot of blood. Fine me an extra 15 minutes for clean up, then pick me up."

Then I hung up.

They didn't call back. In a way, I was almost disappointed.

I had a Marine recruiter who was very determined to get me talking despite pointing out that my age, physique, and politics definitely made me ineligible.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Emily is a Black Dove.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just send them dick pics before blocking them.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are great, have given me some ideas to use in future. The sad part is that most of these catfishing scams come from indentured slaves somewhere in Cambodia. https://pulitzercenter.org/stories/global-monster-myanmar-based-cyber-scams-widen-net

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Makes me sad I NEVER get some random texts. Always someone I know and they always need something. FML

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I told you picking up the kids from practice is not "some bullshit" they were waiting for four hours last time

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It got to the point I started putting my phone in the washer and slamming the lid. I made sure I got to a live agent and then BAM BAM BAM, took about 8 calls and they haven't bothered me for a couple weeks now.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Answered “(local) police department, Sgt Smith speaking, how may I help you?” Once. The random spam slowed way down for quite awhile.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I had a great time at the party last night" - yes,me too but my butt hurts so much I can't sit down now.

Tiananmen Square massacre. Usually stops a few, but I try not to reply at all.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As someone who's worked an emergency line, spammers/marketers do accidentally contact these kind of people/phone lines with no idea who they've called.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just send them lni memes until they stop responding

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just got this one today.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

12345? That's the kind of combination an idiot uses for their luggage!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!

(201)949-7241 buddy you need to give your number better. Just use a black box or something.

1 year ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 17

isnt this doxxing?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It is an open invitation to try to phish them...

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Can’t wait to see the new phishing material next week

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You do understand that texts show the number of the person contacting you (if they aren't saved as a contact), not your own number.... ?

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

No, I'm pretty certain they did not understand that. They might now, though.

Tommy?

It’s their number. I wasn’t gonna bother too much

1 year ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 2

Fair enough. Lol

1 year ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

It's probably spoofed anyway. Not sure how they do it but I've been spam called from my own number before I swear.

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

You can spoof outbound calls and messages but in order to receive calls or messages, you have to actually have control of the number. You cannot spoof that (though there are still hacking methods to do that).

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Phone companies will also rent unused phone numbers to businesses. That's why deb collectors might call from 30 different "local" numbers.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I heard one of the spoofing methods was a 20 digit voip number and at least US based phones systems only show the first 10, so most systems will make it appear to be just the first 10 digits and not show the rest of the numbers.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That might explain why I see some +V###### numbers, actually.

Hmm, dead number in maryland, no hits in google machine.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favourite of these was a guy who did voice acting pretending to be investigating a murder scene, "So what kind of business do you have with the deceased?" Grilling the cold caller over the phone like he's a suspect.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tom Mabe. He loves to prank telemarketers. Here's the "Murder Scene" one. 😆😆🤣 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aOvXxnSEQKY

If you're interested. It's hilarious.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s brilliant

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even though it can be fun, replying just tells them they have a live number.

1 year ago | Likes 408 Dislikes 4

I never replied to a single one of those scam texts and I stopped answering unknown numbers and I haven't received either form of scam in over two years.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It also flags their number as an active number and ok for further use. At that point they can spam groups of people in texts instead of individuals. Don’t answer these people

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then I can share all the memes I get from here. Especially the degenerate ones from Elbow.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always report spam and block. Never reply.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It would have been worth a shot a few years ago before they started plugging AI chatbots into spam systems. Now you're just flying a billboard that says "Real person, this number costs more"

1 year ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 1

Starting an SMS with *0# sends a read conformation back to you from the recipients phone.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The bot*. It tells the bot it has a live number.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

And the bot tells more bots, or the person who runs the bots.

Unless you start actively threatening to hunt them for sport. They stop contacting you really quick after that.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

not a bad idea.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Also when called never confirm who you are when someone asks if they're speaking to (INSERT NAME HERE). Just confirms their data. Instead ask who's calling.

Additionally, if you can stomach it also don't speak when you pick up until they do first, and pause after hearing them to be sure it's a real person. Some sophisticated systems can detect a live voice on the other end or look for common keywords to confirm the number is live.

Or do what I do and never pick up calls from unknown numbers.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

I had a fun period on my phone where I would answer “Hello” but the connection was delayed so no one ever heard me, the response on the other line can tell you a lot about people, and since then I’ve purposefully done that with unknown numbers, robo-calls 100% hang up and you’ll get fewer every year.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have an app downloaded that just autorejects calls that aren't in my contacts. If it's an actual person, they can leave a message.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is the app called

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Android has a "Block calls from unknown numbers" feature built in. Can't speak for Apple, but I'd be surprised if they didn't. Be careful downloading "free" apps that are designed for features that come default on many phones, lest you become the product.

Apparently some of them use certain questions to try and get specific phrases/words recorded, which they then use to steal your identity.
