...even more frightening than his own 'The Shining'.

An underappreciated gem from 1988 (the American remake from 1993 ain't too good), this psychological thriller is considered to have *one of the scariest endings of all time in cinema.*

Basic plot: Rex and Saskia, a young couple in love, are on vacation. When they stop at a gas station, Saskia mysteriously disappears without a trace...

Bewildered, Rex searches everywhere, but to no avail.

After three years and no sign of Saskia...Rex begins receiving letters from a man who claims he knows what happened..

98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you haven't seen this movie before and would like to, be careful not to know *too much* about the story beforehand.

To anyone who has already seen this movie or know the story - PLEASE DON'T SPOIL IT HERE. Thanks :)

Thanks Op... similar premise, but more of a thriller than a horror.. French film; Tell No One... Watch it! :)

Never saw the original, only the remake and Jeff Bridges stole it!

I'm not a fan of Stanley Kubrick, so I won't trust his opinion on movies. Although, I may still try out this one.

The original was the most disturbing movie I've seen.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This movie is brilliant, mainly due to the way the story was told. The American remake however...

I think someone told me about this a lot of years ago and I'd completely forgotten about it

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This movie totally destroyed me with just the premise. I can totally feel that panic he feels when she first disappears.

This move is on MMX today but it's the 1993 version...monkey feathers!

The Golden Egg (Het Gouden Ei) is a fantastic book!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Noooop! So terrifying I couldn't even read this! This movie fucked me up.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Idk. Read the wiki, seems a little fucked, but kinda seems like the dude made his choice and paid the price for it.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was trying to find the name of this!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you watched it before? If not give it a look, it's good

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fuck yeah - this is an amazing film! Unrelated, but I also thought Les Fugitifs which I saw at about the same time had a very bad remake ..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I watched this late at night, by myself, on British Television when I was young. It fucked me up. Don't watch it. It will haunt you.

Fav & forget

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Is it gory?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. It doesn't focus on violence and gore, rather it masterfully builds up suspense and tension. Worth your time

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I watched this when I was about 12. It cost me some sleep. Didn't really want to close my eyes after the ending.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DON'T watch the American remake. It dulls all of the original's sharp edge with an unnecessary added ending.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Agreed.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does someone have a link to stream it?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-ySF3M3vIw. I'm not aware of any other place where it can be streamed except possibly netflix

Its actually based on a Dutch book I read in school a long long time ago... The Golden Egg. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Egg

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Everyone in the Netherlands had to read that book. I had to read it in 2004 when I was in VMBO-t, had to read it again 2 year later at Havo.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think a lot of us Dutchies read it in school haha, quite the good read.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Very thin book, quick read, good story tho

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Read it in school as well. Quite thin with only 90 pages. But the story... still one of the best I've read.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why the film sounds familiar, thanks. I found this book a few month ago at a booksale.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a dutch movie of it too, but not a very good one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Boekverslagen.... shudders

Spoilers below. Don't read my reply if you want to see the movie

Sociopath kidnaps GF. Sociopath contacts BF, promises to show him what happened to GF. BF gets drugged. BF gets burried alive. The end.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't really see how The Shining is scary, especially by today's standards. I guess the corpse in the tub was a bit spooky.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Me neither. Then again, I can't stand Kubrick's "Look! Another symbol!"- directing style, anyway, not to mention those mostly lame movie /1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't usually say it because people are on their knees for him around here but I fucking hate Kubrick.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

adaptations made from Stephen King's books (in contrast to the movies based on his short stories, and "Carrie".)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the movie only good if you don't know the ending? Most good movies can be re-watched, after all.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The usual suspects is good but youll always know the twist

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Part of the comes from the experience of the first watch, which in a thriller/horror the ending is a big part of that.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Partly. Good movies put hints in for you to look for on the second watch, right?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like it might be good, thanks.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Have fun. Though you may not want to watch it too late at night :P

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And this is from a grimoire that, in a different spell, calls for boiling a cat alive, so it's gotta be some SHIT.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm genuinely considering performing a necromantic ritual whose ONLY warning is "This should be done by one who fears nothing."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do you...do you actually believe in spells? I'm sorry, I just find it hard to distinguish between trolls and dumb dumbs now. PM me if you -

The girl was kidnapped and buried alive. The kidnapper does the same to the boy 3 years later to show him what happened to his "missing" gf.

Done in particularly horrid way. Tells him "I can show you where I took her" and has him drink drugged coffee. Wakes up in the box. /shudder

FUUUUUUUUUUCK NO

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks! Not a movie i'm ever going to watch! Hate those kind of stories :)

Same here. I only recently got the courage to watch Alien (loved it btw) because I learned that the cat doesn't die.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

In the 1993 remake, the boy is saved in the end by his new girlfriend (he doesn't have a happy ending in the original.)

Holy fuck. Mind fuck movies are the scariest to me.
