Maine? I feel like that is in Maine.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did they build it?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imagine being the lighthouse keeper there for 6 months. I get cabin fever just by thinking about it.

I would live there

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imagine trying to do basic maintenance to the outside of that.

I concur.

Deliveries will be made next week.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The camera taking that video does not seem much higher than the lighthouse itself.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve seen other pictures where this lighthouse is covered in ice during the winter. My question remains, how was this lighthouse built in the first place?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carefully, over multiple seasons, and with a complete lack of health and safety.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How did they build it when this kinda shit was going on??

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope they remembered to close the windows.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure ben kingsley's doing mind control experiments up there.

What…

The Lighthouse with Patrick Robertson and Willem Dafoe. It's interesting. Give it a whirl. Don't look up anything about it.

Probably Zombie proof ...

6 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Umm if you are there and surrounded by zombies you are eventually just going to starve, at that point it becomes a zombie hotel.

6 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Maybe the waves toss you a fish up there now and then :P

Watching stuff like this and you can understand the story about that island where the three lighthouse keepers vanished without a trace.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Flannan Isles lighthouse. It was almost certainly a rogue wave. Fun fact: the classic Who episode "The Horror of Fang Rock" is based on that.

La Jument is a lighthouse in Brittany, Northwestern France. The lighthouse is built on a rock about 300 metres from the coast of the island of Ushant. It was listed as a historic monument in 2017.

Long as Starlink works there, I'd come to enjoy it. Repair it whenever the weather was favorable, maybe extend the platform to the left to support a helicopter instead of relying on boats.

I wonder if there were any OSHA violations and fatalities while it was built.....

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Only" 3 people died to build it. 3 more people died when resupplying it. The building was arguably less dangerous, because it was done when the sea is calm. The resupplying however, sometimes had to be done in rough seas.

I really thought this was AI generated, because it made no sense to me - how do you get out after your X-weeks shift is done? How do you get provisions, etc?

But it's real: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phare_du_Four

They used cable to get in and out food and people. It was a very dangerous job and very lonely. These "phare de haute mer" (high sea lighhouse) were called hell (enfer). They are now all automated

There's a bunch of lights like this, even in the US. Rocks need to be marked somehow, and slapping a stone edifice on top worked really well. Still does work, which is why a lot of these are still operating.

This seems… unsafe

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want to listen to the shipping forecast in there

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think I have a Lego kit of the lighthouse

6 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I rent it???

IRL Old Spice bottle

That had to be crazy to build. I’m guessing there’s some season or period of time the waves aren’t that aggressive?

6 months ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

They are probably mild about 90% 0f the time. 8% of time too rough to work there. 2% it's like this.

Oh hell nah. This is western Brittany, one of the most treacherous maritime corridor in Europe. There are dozens of sailors songs about how easy it is to die there.

The article says that construction had to be suspended during the winter, and also that winter storms caused enough damage that the beginning of the second construction season was devoted to repairing it. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phare_du_Four

I feel like that has to be mildly terrifying from the inside.

You generated my thought in text form for me. Thank you.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wanna know how they managed to build it, that's damn impressive.

5 months ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

In my head-cannon, they've always been there. They were there before the dinosaurs, and will be there long, long after we're gone.

But, yeah. I've wondered that, too.

You definitely don’t forget to close your windows tight

Imagine being the light keeper. Intermittent thrumming from giant waves. Lighting the lamp every night, cleaning the glass every day, sounding the horn every few minutes when the fog is bad. Fishing every day for food, landing supplies and dragging them up the stairs, including heavy containers of water. Stuck there, months on end, until your relief finally arrives, and knowing you'll have to return.

You are taking all the fun out of this job. 😂

I think the solitude would be nice. All you'd need is a stack of books and some writing and art supplies to while away the time. The routine would be something you could easily immerse yourself in completely. Sort of like a secular monastery.

When I was younger before getting married and having a kid I think I could have done it easily. Throw in a satellite Internet connection and it would have been very easy for me.

*get to return

Imagine being the people who were building it before they had anywhere inside to go to.
