She left me for another guy, so I left her for the mountains. My first backpacking trip, and it was solo.

Jul 5, 2017 1:00 AM

I had been gathering gear the last few months, to really get into backpacking this summer. My first trip was solo, in Rawah Wilderness, RNF Colorado. I did 3 different trips. 4 days a piece. From 2 different trailheads. All back to back.

Chamber lake on the drive up

So much roaring water.

A small lake before Lost Lake

Laying in my tent, I hear some rustling, turns out it's just a deer.

Up in the alpine enjoying some coffee.

Had to maneuver through so much snow????

The first time in my life my campsite was like my dreams.

A view from inside the tent when I woke up.

Sat in this spot for hours.

Couldn't have imagined a better way to deal with what I then saw as a loss.

Feeling so small.

Had maybe 500ft to go before the peak, but being solo and lived my whole life at sea level. 11,750ft was enough for me. Atleast I got to see the other side!

Last campsite on the way down.

I would like to do this solo only I don't trust myself to.

They'll never find the bodies out there.

You go boy!,,

I feel this. When my ex boyfriend and I split I went to REI the next day off and bought a brand new pack and three weeks later drove (1/2)

(2/2) drove cross country to move back home. I'm still finding myself but being lost in the woods is perfection.

You have a darn beautiful country, being alone seems awesome.

I'm almost entirely certain that if more people dealt with problems like this, that we'd all be a little bit happier.

The second to last picture looks like a guy in the mountains, with a thick mustache. I can't unsee it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now I see it too. Damn you & your observant eyes!

Beautiful.

This looks so much like the San Juans, my old stomping grounds. I'm happy for you.

You have some beautiful unspoiled places in the USA. Enjoy the hell out of them.

I'm from MN, but I used to go campim in the Rawah every fall. Such an incredible place! Glad you got to enjoy it man!

Haha, that is what spurred my first backpacking trip. Definitely a great way to heal.

Yep. Quit my job. Left my home state to come out here. And it's been miraculous. I got a job here out of no where and starting my new life.

Good on you, dude. Onwards and upwards. Enjoy your new hobby and new lease on life!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I should probably do this but im to afraid my good memory will be the death of me alone on such a trek.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Read "left her *in the mountains" Glad I was wrong about that one.

Backpacking has changed my life in all the best ways. Welcome to the good life, you'll never be fully happy off trail again.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just be SUPER careful solo-ing. I was careless once and it very nearly cost me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea I was nervous about going out at first, but once I was out I was very careful to not push myself further than my very known capabilities

As a lady with a broken heart in the same situation, the mountains are an amazing healing experience. Right on!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Couldn't have asked for a better experience :)

RAWR-AH is all I saw and it looks amazing!

Pronounced ray-wah. Beautiful country. Most of it is above 10,000'. Dry & cool, perfect for camping.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That sounds even better and thanks for the pronounced like this part. I'm horrible with that.

Great hiking trails. Plenty of water. Gorgeous views. Lots of wildlife. Incredible place to go backpacking for days.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take me with you next time :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only if you pay for gas, buy me breakfast in Fort Collins, and make sure I don't lose my ID and credit card next time:)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Curious for myself. I like to do day hikes. Is it a bad idea to go alone? I carry a small medkit and a ~3 in knife along with whatever food

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't push any further than I knew I could handle. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's literally all I did up to this. And in Indiana. So flat with no predators whatsoever. Lmao.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But from what I've been told, it isn't a good idea, but I was very familiar with my capabilities from day hikes and overnights that I 1/2

Disappear into another country where you don't speak any of the language. Rely on your instincts. Doesn't matter if a city or a tribe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You will be amazed by how universal human kindness is.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in CO and day hike alone all the time. Just know your capabilities, the terrain, check the weather, tell someone where you go 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and turn around if it doesn't feel right. Things can go bad on a 1 hour hike too.

Promise myself if I ever know that a girl is with me but was with another guy first and still is with that other guy (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll wait till she leaves him and then leave her. This I feel is a part in the bro-code. (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well funny you mention it. She was with him for 3ish months of me not knowing. A month or so after I find out, he left her out of no 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where, and moved to like Nevada to work with his uncle. Lolol. So my justice has been served after I left. She's tried contacting me a bunch

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See that's what it should be like. Double whammy. Good for you and the other guy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I couldn't agree more. I learned more about myself in this last 2 weeks than I have in my whole 21 years of life so far.

Just promise us you won't be one of those annoying d-holes who never shuts up about it and keeps bringing it up unprovoked for years to come

Like grats on your victory and I'm sure it was loads of fun and you'll want to share it a lot, but be mindful of how much :P
