Can confirm at least in 1986. I was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in NC and me and three brothers, in uniform i might add, went to the mall just outside the base. Inside we were subjected to mothers grabbing their children and moving away from us. Giving us a very wide berth. Im pretty sure it wasnt the uniforms.
Black guy walking through parking lot at grocery store this afternoon. Old white guy parked in handicap stop what he was doing to glare at the guy until he got out of sight. I stopped and stared at the old man the exact same way he looked at the black guy until the old man left.
I went to universal studios the other day and saw part of the Nope set. It was freaky and exactly how I imagined it. There were keys and coins on the ground all over.
I know that this is a problem that plagues the US. But I also know that kids can get this in their heads. Depending on where you live, this might be true. But I was mentoring a high school kid and he would tell me he always felt like he was being watched. When you think you're a target, you'll always feel like a target.
Teens are egocentric, generally. They really do feel like everyone is judging them and comparing themselves to others. And, to be fair, a lot of it is real. We've built a system where students are tracked nearly every second of the day, they are being watched and targeted.
There's definitely times when my trans friend will be upset about a comment that I'm almost 100% positive wasn't misgendering/rude/transphobic. She'll just have heard shit from people so often that a comment with any chance of being interpreted as bigoted is assumed to be.
A common example: when someone says "what's up guys?" And she's stressed or in a bad mood she'll say "I'm not a guy" confrontationally and I just don't think 99.9% of the people who said "guy" were saying anything other than the equivalent of "y'all"
I get this. I d have to walk in those shoes to really see though. And I can’t. Just try to be as empathetic as I can. Which is probably not 100%. But trying.
If you are not a white male, In America you are living in a dystopian country. If you ARE a white male: you have no clue. (Sauce: I was complaining about being pulled over (for the first time in four years)
As a white male, just because I haven't personally experienced it, doesn't mean I'm not aware of it. Clueless would be having no frame of reference and thinking everyone has the same societal experiences that I do. Ex: just because I don't get pulled over doesn't mean I don't understand the anxiety people of color have in that situatuon or the frequency that it happens to them.
Yes, feeling like a target can be self-delusion, but it's also circular. Feeling targeted makes you try to look innocent. Trying to look innocent makes you look suspicious, and looking suspicious makes people target you because you look nervous. Rinse, repeat. It's the same with scared white people syndrome. They think they're going to get mugged in the city, so they wander around clutching their purses, which makes them look like juicy, soft targets to criminals.
2/2 I get this myself. I'm a white dude, but I grew up loving to explore "forbidden" areas like construction sites or areas behind businesses, and I skated places I wasn't supposed to. Consequently, I've got this instant reaction to cops that they're going to hassle me. I'm not doing anything, but I'm TRYING to act natural, which is unnatural. That makes people pay attention to me when they otherwise wouldn't. Paranoia breeds suspicion.
Yeah, you're right. Thankfully because I was a white kid dressed like a skate rat trespassing on private property, I just gave a two-finger salute to the cops from the brim of my cowboy hat, and they laughed and then we all shared mayonnaise sandwiches and listened to Garth Brooks.
I’m just saying on average they don’t shoot first with white kids they sometimes arrest but it’s not often a question of the cops shooting white kids. They arrest when they are skate punks but at least they don’t tend to think it’s okay to just shoot first
Things can be sad and funny. I was sad that my grandpa died. It was funny that my grandma filled his pockets with popcorn kernels before having him cremated.
I am thinking: Sickening. Disgusting. Despicable. Wrong on every level. Ignorant hatred driven by sick twisted types who want power & control. OH HELL NO.
It is a lot worse than sad. There are still a lot of places a Black person doesn't dare go, there is a chance of being killed just by being in the wrong neighborhood.
Black people actively avoided my home town for most of my life. Was only the last 10 years or so they started feeling safe enough to come. My childhood friend was half black and as a fucking preteen some van of guys drove by her and threatened her. Fucking disgusting. Town is mostly Indian and Mexican now so it's a bit less terrifying for minorities. Police force is still mostly white though so, you know.
Hate to say it but there's generations of propaganda against dark skin, and only decades of unraveling it, it's gonna take a lot more work. Only place you won't get stared at is Africa, until you start to talk probably. There are some great cities in Africa though. But it's awful, and I wish we could just cut the shit, or start cutting the racists out of society. Good news is, it's on its way to being better, but that's poor comfort to those on the receiving end. It really fucking sucks.
Depends on where you go. Regardless of skin colour, people can tell if you were raised in a more well off country, higher caloric intake younger makes you just straight up bigger. Not fatter, bigger. Broader shoulder, bigger chest, taller, etc. Knew plenty of people while in the navy who were African, Chinese etc who would could pegged for a foreigner instantly just because of their build.
Is that how dark humor works? It's the only thing I've found funny for the better part of 13 years, and I'm only 26. Am I fucked up and just not aware of it?
Fucking terrifying, more like. Peele is an incredible story-teller and this short story is a daily truth for black people around the world, especially in America.
I can't even comprehend how dreadful it is. Knowing parents of minorities, especially African Americans, have to talk to their children about what to interact around a cop so they aren't brutalized or shot dead. It's a dystopian concept that they are living even outside of school shootings.
Many Americans haven't seen their own country but consider themselves well traveled because they went to Europe for a summer. We're a big ass country, so yeah it counts as travel
Yeah, not what I meant by travelling. People in the US (especially in certain states) might be racist as fuck, but globally y'all don't even crack top 10. At least you guys generally understand racism is a thing.
Oof, downvoted because either Americans HAVE to be #1, even at racism, or the chinabots don't want hate directed anywhere but America. Who knows. I only know of one county more dangerous for black folks, South Africa, but America is probably nearly equal. South African whites are very fucked up in their hatred. But there's also less of them so I'm not sure what the stats are. Many Asian countries are also much more racist, but much less dangerous. So I can't think of any more dangerous.

Too close to the truth to be funny. As a middle aged white guy, I am disgusted at how my contemporaries behave toward black Americans

They're just Americans. People dont say white Americans

Evergreen humour; at least for the United States.
Higure
How the fuck have we come to accept cropped shit like this? You know we can just downvote that trash, right?
Pugovitz
I know this is a comedy skit, but it's so well done I bet whoever made it could transition into making genuinely good suspense/horror movies.
thereitis101
You can see the nuance in why he’s so good at making horror films.
BalloonPie
Why is this cropped vertically though?

White supremacy won't die, until white people see it as a white issue they need to solve, rather than a black issue they need to empathize with .

And this only reinforces that mindset. How is this helping?
AuntieCoddswaddle
Red cars get targeted by cops. That's what we're experiencing. We stand out to certain people and that's a problem they want "fixed"

Run down beaters too. Cops love targeting poor people

The problem with America isn't all the guns. It's the fact that there are people who think "assumingly" is a word.

‘Merica…. This kind of fucked shit doesn’t happen in other countries
AllisDashChalmersWasAnInsideJob
Plenty of real things to bash USA about. You don't have to make up this horseshit

What? Israeli–Palestinian off the top of my head. China and uyghurs. Not saying other shit makes up for usa, but shit is bad almost everywhere.

Its not exclusive to the US, America is just shallow about it compared to the multi generational layered fuckery elsewhere

“Especially in America?” Something tells me you haven't done a lot of traveling, have you?
onepinksheep
Racism exists everywhere, yes, but the chances of getting shot for it are higher in America than everywhere else.

That's not a fair comparison. Chances of getting shot are higher in 'Murica, period. Racism just isn't an exception.
Giant2179
I've traveled all over the US. It's true. We're racist as fuck
