I worked as an expo for 2 years so I already knew a chef's job was a thankless one, but holy shit, yesterday I went with a volunteer group to serve food for 200 people in the poorest city in the state.

We were told the church it was held at would have people who would do the cooking, we'd do the serving. Nope. Out of all our volunteers only I knew how to cook so I had to do it by myself.

Every time someone came in to ask how much longer, I was ready to throw something at them. (I got done 20 minutes early but no thanks to the peanut gallery!) The church people holding it were nothing but rude and condescending but the families who came for the food were nice so that was cool.

Chefs/cooks, hats off to you all. I can only imagine it's so much worse with people hawking you for food that's being paid for versus food that's free. I don't envy you at all.

i Salute you

Thank you. I just finished a 12 hour shift in my kitchen. I needed that today.

Church groups are ALWAYS the worst when it comes to food. From fake tips to stealing food.

Oh boy, been there man. It's always a nightmare with church or community groups. Good on you for pushing through!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you, that genuinely means a lot

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah church people have the potential to be extremely rude.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found people running church event are the worst people. Always feels like its about the event organizers and getting praised for it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Couldn't really back out of it, wasn't fair to the families coming for it even if the church was all assholes. Not their fault.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You did the right and good thing, even though you got nothing but shit for it. Nobody can take that away from you.

Way to step up broheim

Kitchen hours are long; the pay is laughable; it kills your social life; and most of it is prep work; but it's really fun af.

Having been a cook for 4 years, in restaurants in which the kitchen has no AC, and passed out once due to heat exhaustion, thanks

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

For the recognition, I wish everyone had to work in service industry before they are allowed to go to one and bitch about mundane shit.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I agree about that 100%. I wasn't an asshole before by any means but I do tip more now and give the house benefit of the doubt.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Burgers, hotdogs, porkchops, chicken thighs, green beans, potatoes!

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

What fucking church has a congregation where only one person knows how to cook those? Those are the simplest foods possible!

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Didn't know how to cook, period. We set up this event with the church, they promised me they'd have people who ran these events there to 1/

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

yknow actually run it, we were just extra hands. The people there was at first one 70 y/o man who forgot where he was then left, then we 2/

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

were graced by a 60 y/o couple that was nothing but judgmental and snobby. My group did everything. 0/10 never again. 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It might not seem like very hard to cook meals but to cook for 200 people everything just becomes 1000x more difficult so hats off to you OP

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Made worse by their REALLY ancient six unit gas stove that I had to light by hand! It kept going out too. Thought I'd die.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

My grill is absolute garbage and cooking for 4 people is extraordinarily hard, I couldn't even imagine 200 people! Props to you

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No staff, no equipment, a fuck ton of people to cook for... I'm surprised you didn't quit after the first minute, I know I would...

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

They did have nice skillets. If it didn't weigh 40lbs I would have disappeared their old cast iron one...

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Oh I'm also positive I sweat out my entire body weight into my clothes.

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

If you are into manga. Make sure to read bambino! It is what got me interested in cooking. And what made me respect cooks

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's normal

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

i was a dishwasher for about a decade...i just this march left and i'm a pool boy now...never stepping into a kitchen as an employee again

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Much appreciated, friend. Well done for pulling through!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And into the food?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah just mostly collected under my boobs

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Much respect to you, Mofo. A lesser man would've quit or half assed the gig. The sense of coming through surely won out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

military cooks sweating over the pots...as they serve ya...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We need to sweat that much to counteract the overwhelming alcoholism.

"Never trusta skinny chef with a clean apron" my dad says

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Bollocks, the fat fucks are the ones that don't work and just pretend to cook before fucking off to do coke in the bathroom.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yeah and if the kitchen staff mess something up its your fault

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My father is a chief, i have seen i'm serve 80-90 meal, only main serving, in less than an hour, 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The amount of men is high in this industry because it's like a sport(english isn't my first tongues)2/2 also, he served the meal alone

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But did you replace said weight with a cold beer or 36 After?

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

"A" cold beer? After serving you down atleast 6-7 then you try powerwashing the kitchen.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

You missed the or 36 didn't yeah

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I tend to power wash the kitchen then down my beer. But long as the job gets done. :P who gives a fuck eh?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work for a catering company and I can agree that serving 200+ people is a huge feat.Especially if you want to serve better than sandwiches

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

250 people for a wedding it's about that prep life

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its no joke for sure

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did it for a friends wedding at only cost buffet style 2 chefs and a runner was busy to say the least lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My brother is a trained chef and his ex mother in law asked him to single handedly cook her wedding meal. For 200. He's nicer than me since

8 years ago | Likes 152 Dislikes 0

For a second I thought "Well if he's paid 200$ its not bad at all" then...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha my bad. No payment. Not even sure he ate it to be honest. She kind of skimped on the food

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I grilled for a 100 person engagement party. The groom kept walking over and messing with the grill. Turned the knobs counterclockwise.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

First time = spatula to knuckles, and remind him he is supposed to be getting married?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

He did it. I would have told her where to go. So hats off to You! I know how hard that is

8 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

My brother-in-law cooked for our wedding shower, but that was also his gift.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did he get paid? I'm definitely turning down all unpaid offers from now on! I didn't even get a meal :(

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

Bruh, is your time and effort. From now on, always turn down all unpaid offers.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This was specifically a volunteer event so defeated the purpose. But yes from now on. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope! Just did it cause he's a nice guy. I definitely wouldn't have. But then again I hated this girl and her family so I'm biased

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They didn't even feed you?? Fuck that, as the chef you get to eat what you cook at least, with a few beers/alcohol thrown in. Sucks dude :/

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Sonofa... see, this sort of bullshit is the reason I stay home on Sundays.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

We were promised a meal each (which my organization paid for LOL) but we ended up giving away our plates. Ah well.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

damn mate, you and your group got bent over hard, refuse all future requests from that church group

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And they say you should never trust a thin chef.
