Canada and the Netherlands are big time pals. The queen of Holland spent WWII in Canada. When she gave birth, the land beneath her hospital room was temporarily transferred to Holland.

This was done by a special act of the Canadian parliament so that the heir to the throne would be Dutch. In recognition, Holland has supplied tulips for the Canadian capital ever since.

Also, it was primarily Canadian forces which liberated Holland from the Nazis.

In the spring about 1 million tulips bloom in our capital Ottawa, a tradition since WW2. As a Canadian I have much love for the Dutch.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 million is just the city planting - most homes also plant tulips bringing the total to millions. Great marketing by the Netherlands.

Well, here is something i didn't know yet even though i am dutch and genuinly used to have a interest in WW2 history. Thanks! +1

To be clear, we're sending them for being a huge part in our liberation of the Germans, not because of the queen thing.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

isnt one directly related to the other?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why not both?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It is both

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't send a country tulips for the best part of a century because they hosted a former queen, could be both but mainly the freedom part

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always thought this was a weird connection, but I'm happy to welcome my Dutch friends. Come, enjoy our make syrup as I did your pancakes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bring enough for everyone, eh? :)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They have those at the grocery in Canada, no need to bring any. We will supply you for your visit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't she still be dutch because her mom was? That doesn't make sense. If you go to Mexico and have your kid, it's still American too.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jus soli-the law of the soil-principle by which a child born in a countrys territorial jurisdiction acquires that countrys nationality

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jus sanguinis-the law of the blood-is the principle by which a child acquires the nationality of his or her parents.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Today, most if not all countries apply a mixture of these two principles. But Likely for royalty, both were required

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

netherlands go fully jus sanguinis, only abandoned childs get dutch citizenship if they are found on dutch ground, so transfering the land >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

> only made the child non-canadian...a nice gesture to make it born in the netherlands but utterly superfluous...<<<

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That must have been annoying for the woman giving birth in the room just underneath to find out her baby was a Dutch citizen...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it wasnt because dutch citizenship goes by blood and not by birthplace, only abandoned children are excempt from that...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh interesting. I wonder what happens when a person from a country that does it by birthplace has a child while in Holland?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the two or more states in question (netherlands plus parents nations) have to agree on giving the child at least one citizenship because of>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>an international treaty that makes it illegal to have people without any citizenship...<<<

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So they’re not stateless, got it. Neat!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Canada made the land under the ward unclaimed* thus international territory. Slightly but definitely different than giving it to Holland.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Still a grand gesture. They didn't need to do anything like that, yet they did. :D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, it was declared Dutch Territory, I'll link a page that goes to Canadian Parliament, but it's friggen LONG.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also the baby was not the heir to the throne, but 3rd in line.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cause it was a girl. #DisappointedParents

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Haha, no actually queen Juliana had 4 daughters, no sons.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What I'm saying is if she had a son, he would've been first in line as heir. According to what I read. I really have no idea.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are correct. That bit of sexism in the succession laws wasn't abolished until 1983.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool but where can I buy some?

8 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure they were just a one time thing for Canada 150. Not sure if you can get them any more

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tulips are usually planted in the fall, so I'm guessing most stores won't have any right now. In August/Sept. try Home Depot, Home Hardward

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Really? I had a Dutch friend refer to tulips as "Dutch weeds to bring in tourists"

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Hmm, I think he might have been talking about actual weed.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I find it harder to believe that a Dutch person would insult marijuana over flowers.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually the Dutch are the biggest cut flower exporters in the world. It's a big part of trade here.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but that also has to do with having one of the biggest ports in the world

A minor bit of context: While it was the First Canadian Army that liberated the Netherlands, that army was in fact considerably diverse. /2

8 years ago | Likes 484 Dislikes 6

Maybe has something to do with Canada being diverse?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 61

Read the second part, the diversity was added by divisions/units from other countries. Places like Poland and (the then) Czechoslovakia /2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

2/ had no army due to occupation.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I was about to say...@OP might want to read a little more about Market Garden

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 108

Good ole Monty fucking things up

The Dutch friendship with Canada stems more from our sheltering their Royal family during the war. The Tulips, specifically, come from 1/?

The fact that when their Princess was born we ceded them sovereignty the floor of the hospital where it was happening so the Princess 2/?
