Chasing me down so he could get a closer look

Manatees are really friendly, and if you don't crowd them or go right up to them, they will usually come up to you. Sometimes they will even follow you. Every now and then I will see a tourist paddling frantically trying to get away from one because all they saw was the nose sticking out the water. People that aren't familiar with them sometimes think it's a gator snout sticking out of the water and coming at them.
Here's a link to the original, full length video https://youtu.be/9GWvmRbtxGg

Curious sea cows, view from above and below

I love the way the manatee in the bottom half of the screen looks like he's staring at the camera and working things out. The video on the lower half of the screen was taken with a camera mounted on the bottom of the canoe.

As soon as he spotted me he swam up to me at full speed

When I spotted this manatee today, he was cruising along with another manatee and as soon as he saw me, he made a hard turn and swam up to the canoe really fast. This video isn't speed up.
Here's a link to the original video showing more of the encounter, https://youtu.be/M6kSMhiWujQ

Double barrel snot gun

I was glad he didn't do this while he was facing me.
When he swam up to the line, none of the other manatees expected him to shatter the previous record of 11 tails.

Curious Sea Cows

These manatees came up to the canoe and spent a long time checking it out. They have small eyes but can see very well. When they go under your canoe or kayak, it's a good idea not to make any fast moves that will startle them. As long as you don't startle them, they won't tip you.

And just in case you came here to see an actual manatee dump...

Barbara manateeeee..... You are the one for meeeee...

Word is out in the marine mammal world that you usually go paddlin' commando.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whenever I see them in Marco, I have to fight the urge to jump in and hug one.

That battery setup in #3 - what happens if you capsize?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I was in 5th grade, I did a report on manatees.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do they seem to be more curious of your canoe than regular ones? I'm a Florida native and have never seen them that inquisitive!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, both manatees and dolphins seem very interested in it. That being said, they will go up to any canoe or kayak if your patient.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love your posts. MORE MANATEES!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Personatee.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tha “full speed” manatee looks diferent. Are there alge growing on it’s skin?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, that is algae. Manatees have naturally flaky skin to keep barnacles and algae from building up. Sometimes it builds up anyway though.

Best dump ever! ????

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

Thanks. I didn't know if a manatee dump would be appreciated but decided to do it anyway :-)

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It was awesome! Please do more! Also, your name is too fitting with your post lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a feeling it's probably frowned upon to swim with manatees?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, except in Crystal River. That place is super crowded though and I always feel bad for the manatees there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What the hell is your actual real job? I’ll take 2 though please.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm the owner of the See Through Canoe company. Getting out & having wildlife encounters & sharing them is the best part of what I do.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea. Blah blah blah. Please send 2 manatees. TIA!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I expected Manatee poo.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

The very last gif is a manatee poo :-)

@op can you pet them, is that cool to do when they come up like that?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, you're not supposed to touch them, even if they come up to you. The manatees seem to like the interaction, but it's not good for them

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would be hard pressed not to give the sea cows a pat on the head. But I know why we are not supposed to. Thanks for the quality content.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP How can you resist not petting them?! Do you recognize some of them now by their markings? Do you think they see you as another manatee?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's easy, their cute, but I just don't feel the need. Yes, I recognize many individuals. I have also been taking thorough notes for years

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Manatees...a sci-guy said the manatee was probably what sailors mistook as mermaid. WTF? Must've been drunker than shit. The sci-guy...LOL!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That WOULD explain the lack of sailor-mermaid hybrids...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uh, what’s up with the battery situation there bud?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The battery powers the electric motor. Sometimes I take 2 batteries if I'm going to go on a long trip.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for taking the time to put this together! The split perspective was a nice touch!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Woah this is the coolest thing i have seen in forever. Could you technically just jump in there and bath around with it too?Cuz it'd be cool

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wonder this too bc I would want to so bad!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, they are very friendly, but you're not supposed to touch them and should always let them come to you instead of approaching them

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After seeing the snot cannon in action, pretty sure I found my spirit animal.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do they let you pet them?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They will, but you aren't supposed to .

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We used to go to Homosassa Springs FL every year and see manatees

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a great spot for seeing them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was swimming in a freshwater place just outside orlando once caught a glimpse of a manatee and have never moved so fast to get out of 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

The water. Was my Australian reflex. Then laughed so hard when I realised it was a friendly manatee and hopped back in 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Even when you know it's a harmless friendly animal, because of their size it can be intimidating the first time you're right next to one

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

What is the stuff on their backs? Looks like he needs a good scrubbing

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Probably algae

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok, who the f*** is downvoting manatees?!

8 years ago | Likes 214 Dislikes 4

The sea cow is being more of a cow than they are... I'm guessing. Nasty people who downvote this stuff.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People who don't like Jamie Hynaman

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Super fucking jealous people

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

PETA, or someone who thinks clear canoes are anti-christian

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

The Bible is pretty clear on that!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Downvote fairies.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I downvote the guy constantly trying to disguise his business ads as Casual Internet Posts. Not sea cows.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

This

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

2/1 shows are just ads, like "funniest commercials..." & peps watch them because they find the ads entertaining, like superbowl commercials

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1/1 I'm not trying to disguise anything. Notice the username & watermark. And if an "ad" entertains peps, then why hate on it? Some tv...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you for bringing back that wonder and awe of our natural world that a certain hunter of crocodiles did before. Manatee poo and all.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And thanks for taking the time to show support :-)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Safe to belly rub?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, you're not supposed to touch them, they are protected by the MMPA (marine mammals protection act)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where did you get the clear kayak?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's in my username, just add a .com and you're there :-)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Makes sense thx :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op Where was this video taken?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which one ?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't realize there were multiple locations! I meant the YouTube vid.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That one was taken in St Pete FL. Most of my vids are taken in St Pete, but I wander all over FL so some of them are from other places in FL

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice. I live in Tallahassee and love kayaking. Very cool shots!
