nph looks so young

guy in back is scaring me

had to get Jake Busey in this bad boy

I saw this in cinema on my 14th birthday. It was UK 15. BY the following Christmas the video was re-rated to an 18. Folks bought me it. I do however recall within the first 5 minutes in the cinema thinking, "Should I be watching this? Dude just got ripped in half!" But of course, it was - and is - awesome.

Where the hell is Michael ironside??

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Retired and old. He's one of my favorite actors. He does voiceovers for video games from time to time.

I watched this as a teen and legit the best part is Clancy Brown's performance.

Did you know they used some mutagen from the TMNT set to mutate some flesh so they had some cheap knock-off alien monsters? ;)

I've been to where they filmed the bug world, one of the most beautiful sceneries I've ever seen. Hell's Half Acre, Wyoming.

The "censoring" was a BRILLIANT way to get around the limits and cost of CGI at the time. It was effective and morbidly amusing.

No doubt some mega corp is going to market this as bioweapon. Then it will eat the CEO. Hopefully.

Do it Rico!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Pure Practical effects > pure CGI, imo. But balanced combination of both is better

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

This was one of the first times they used a combined process of both practical augmented with CGI.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This and the first Jurassic Park stand tall as examples of how practical effects augmented with CGI will *ALWAYS* age better than pure CGI.

3 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I'd argue stylistic pure CGI like what Babylon 5 used also does very well. Bu pure CGI that tries to be hyper realistic has generally aged poorly i agree.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yerp, its held up well

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One of the best movies of all time! (Better book not gonna nerd out on you) watch it every time I come across it.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was a book?!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Robert A. Heinlein. It’s somewhat of a classic in the sci-fi realm.

I first saw her in Dragonheart in the theatre in ‘96. Knew right then & there I wasn’t as straight as I thought I was. Insta-girl crush. My boyfriend at the time said he wanted her on his ‘Free Five’ (you know, that dumbass list that was a thing back then?). Told him I did too. He was cool with it.

Fun fact: they tried to make Starship Troopers into a video game but they kept tweaking it until they had to rebrand it as "Halo"

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

There is a new, just recently launched Starship Troopers RTS game now, i hear is good but my aging laptop cannot handle it

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, the closest a video game ever came to capturing the spirit of this movie was the original StarCraft ( Zerg vs Terran ) and it was released less than 6 months after the movie came out. Coincidence ?

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You know, I always thought 'this franchise would make an absolutely BANGING video game, why haven't they done it', and I did not know that. That makes so much sense I'm bewildered I never saw it before.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In that same vein, judge dredd was a popular comic book for a long time. They tried to make a movie based on it back in the 80's but it kept getting tweaked until it became robocop

I know it has deeper satirical inclinations, I know it's a terribly loose adaptation of the highly-revered source material, but, dammit, I still love this film. I can just put it on and watch it the whole way through and it goes by so fast. Of all its positives, my favorite part is how the main characters visibly age, both chronologically and metaphorically, throughout the film. Look at them at the beginning then at the end, especially when "reinforced" with new recruits that look like kids.

3 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

Yep

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only part of the book I remember being faithfully reproduced in the film is the speech Michael Ironside gives when he's their teacher. The film is better off as satire. The book is really short and free to read online.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

All of this. It’s horrible and funny and I love it.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I read about 2/3, maybe 3/4 of the book. It was dull and at times I wasn't sure if it was a commentary on fascism or it was just about >

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Honestly many of his other books are better. Tunnel in the sky, Red planet, Citizen of the galaxy. Loved Podkane of Mars.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

< fascists. It had some interesting technology stuff at the beginning which influenced a bunch of modern sci-fi, which I appreciate, though.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It's definitely not either. It's a utopian take on militarism to be sure, and it's just one of several social science fiction pieces the author wrote. He did Stranger in a Strange Land at the same time, and that's was a counter-culture classic for decades.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In terms of influence, I know that James Cameron's "Aliens" began as an unrelated adaptation of Starship Troopers, which then was melded into being a sequel to Ridley Scott's "Alien". I've read that Aliens is arguably more faithful to Heinlein's book than this official adaptation.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's a little lacking on its own, but It's a really great comparison piece to Forever war, which was somewhat of a response to Starship troopers. Read them back to back, and it painted a really great picture of the breadth of our views on war.

Thinking of her other movie.

The best Denise Richards movie will always be The Third Wheel.

i think it's called Tammy and the Dinosaur. It's one of the movies you can watch in High on Life.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Close - It's "Tammy and the T-Rex". I ended up watching it in full after seeing a clip of someone playing High on Life. It's a 5/7 perfect film.

Its a horrible way to die but also he was a pretty shitty person like the whole movie.

3 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

It's not. You would die instantly - so much brain trauma

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Was he actually though? Most of the tension was that Rico failed to see his relationship with Carmen was over. Though Zander should have had the wisdom to not antagonize Rico. But Rico also trying to be possessive and escalating conflicts did not help either. Basically both were in need of attitude adjustments.

Verhoeven asked the cast if they'd be comfortable doing that scene and they agreed to do it if he directed it in the nude. He did.

I would've said the entire crew. Make everyone do it, since Verhoeven was kind enough to ask first.
