Name the whole system The Friendzone, because we'll never get there...

I am fucking geeking out over this.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It would only take 700,000 years to get there.

Are we sending Matt Damon?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In the Trappist System no one can hear you talk

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The names leave a little to be desired, mind you.

My question is " what kind of gravitational forces would be implemented to each planet when passing each other in orbit?"

TRAPPIST-1 and planets TRAPPIST a to g. No word on any monks brewing beer there though.

Now this is the Firefly reboot I have been waiting for....

Thanks Joe Rogan

Fucking hell, thank you. Finally someone told me exactly what happened.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's great and good confirmation but did people really think the Sol system was going to unique in any way?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There is always the possibility we are the first intelligent life. That the super intelligent planet raping aliens will be us.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or this 3 dimensional universe is too constricting for super intelligence and they leave it as soon as they find a way

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not with a universe this large. But for the same reason its incredibly unlikely that we'd actually spot one

Do you ever wonder if a moment like this is the start of the domino effect to our demise?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2018?? Naaaaaaw I wanna know nooooow!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The NASA page says the planets might be locked like our moon where it doesn't rotate. Would give nice solar energy!

"Very nearby" = 40 light years or 240 trillion miles. You know... a hop, skip, and jump away.

Right next door.

"Well that's not how I'm getting there... You got directions for those who are walking?" - Mitch Hedberg

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

40ly is actually quite close; It's only about ten times the distance to the closed neighbour of the Sun, Proxima Centauri. 1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Think of the scale of the universe though. Usually we're talking thousands or millions of light years. In relation to that 40 is close

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

There is a large number of stars within that 40 light year range. Space is often massively overestimated

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Might find better candidates closer(looking forward to James Webb going up), but 40ly is still reasonably close. Milky Way is 100k ly across

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

no ones going to touch this really?!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I see what you did there v

Take it +1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It will if we use a good system and comet to it.

Why tho

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They totally missed an opportunity to name them after the seven dwarfs.

9 years ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 3

Somewhere out there, there is a white sun with seven dwarf planets orbiting the sun

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why can't I favorite a comment?

Settled entirely by people from Amsterdam and Colorado

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

As a non native to Colorado or Amsterdam....where do I start filling out my resettlement application?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They haven't been named yet.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Until they are they are probably going to be designated as Trappist-1, trappist-2, ECT. Just. Like. Star Trek

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think they are goin be named with the letters

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They might already be named by beings in that solar system.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Right! I'm like omg what if there are people and we are the aliens?!
