Ranking Your Imgur Reputation

What the hell does reputation mean?

While getting reputation is neat and all it's frustrated me that I have no way of telling what a given score actually means (I suppose technically they mean nothing). So I wanted to find a way of ranking reputations.

Gathering Data with Scripting!

So what I needed to do was gather some data. So I wrote a quick Python script that crawls imgur and identifies unique users from the comments and gallery submissions. Don't worry I'm not the NSA. Using this script I identified ~25000 unique users within a short period of time. A second script looked up all of the reputation scores.

If you've taken any probability and statistics you'll already know what this is. If not this plot shows for a particular reputation score the likelihood that you have a higher score than another random user. The labeled points show the minimum score for reaching a particular reputation level. For myself with a reputation of around 8000 there is about a 79% chance that I have a higher reputation than another random user (at least in the sample). A simpler way of thinking about it is that I have a higher reputation than 79% of the user base (in my sample)

Reputation Categories

This shows the percentage of users in various reputation categories. I found it funny that 3.74% of the sampled users have a negative reputation (Forever Alone). So if you're new here and have zero reputation you still have a higher score than nearly 4~ of the active user base.

A few key numbers

The highest reputation I found in my sample was over 2.1 million points! The lowest -199, you have to wonder what that user did.

You can look up your own reputation percentile

I've included a table that will let you estimate your reputation percentile. Just look for reputation scores just above and below your own score and this will tell you what percentile your reputation falls in.
