Watch where you walk (gross warning)

Jun 20, 2017 2:42 PM

TLDR; had a super painful lump on my foot that's been identified as mrsa, cut up and is finally healing. Op has been in in super pain.

So this was the first day of my foot. I noticed a bit of pain Monday after Mother's Day, and shrugged it off. All there was was this slight bruise all week. Friday night there was an excruciating throbbing pain, so I went to the docs on that Saturday morning, and they diagnosed it with Plantar fasciitis.

The Sunday morning, this little black dot came up. I wasn't too concerned, but by that night (day 3 with no sleep) I decided to head back to see a different doctor the next morning.

The next morning, it had come up a lot. I went to see a doctor, who thought it might have been something in the foot, so she sent me for an X-ray and Ultrasound on the foot. The ultrasound felt like a pizza cutter being dragged across my foot, it was very uncomfortable.

The results came back with nothing in the foot, so she put me on antibiotics and Voltaren and told me if it got any worse that I would have to visit the Emergency room

The next morning, it was much worse. It had swollen to double its size, and it was very tender.

This was taken just one hour before I went to the docs for a check up.
WARNING - IF YOU'RE GROSSED OUT EASILY PLEASE DO NOT LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING IMAGES.
The doctor looked at it and advised me to go to the emergency room to get whatever it was drained as she believed it was some form of cyst at this stage.
I went to the emergency room, and they didn't give me any form of anaesthetic for my foot because they believed it would have hurt more than just hacking at it. They took the top off (as seen in below picture) and as far as I was told, there was quite a bit of muck.

The following photos are healing progress of my foot - until 2 days ago. I repeat again- the squirmish shouldn't continue.

Friday post hospital

The Saturday night- grossest part of this whole time. The red swelling and fever were getting worse

Sent back to the hospital and finally told what I have - MRSA. A highly contagious strain of staphylococcus infection.

Here they gave me laughing gas and scrubbed my foot with a sponge not unlike a scourer. I didn't feel a thing, it was great.

They also prescribed me the proper antibiotics, Bactrim.

Day after the hospital

At its deepest point - close to 1 cm deep

Cut off a part of the dead skin

The dead skin at this point was only collecting gunk, so they decided to take it off

Skin off the foot

This was only 2 days ago. I'm on the mend and walking, but all of this has been within the space of a month really.
I urge you that if anyone you know has a cut that swells up abnormally, is warm to the touch and has fevers get them to a hospital as soon as you can. Because even though I was lucky, this disease can so very easily claim lives if not treated or treated incorrectly.
Keep yourselves safe, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Also if anyone else has had this bug I'd be interested to talk.

You're lucky to have not lost the foot or died. The infection could have spread really fast.

hey I had MRSA too. Looked like green snot coming out of my body before being treated. Glad to hear you're doing better.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tell you what, baby smooth feet at the end of this tho

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never had MRSA but I've had similar, undiagnosed lesions in my armpits, butt cheeks and scrotum. Yes you read that right.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah i had some of these on my leg. Was out with a friend when one burst. Was like I pissed myself with blood and pus

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had golden staph in my elbow. Started off as a massive lump, doc found nothing abnormal about, the next day it was getting drained in ER.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got MRSA on my forehead from an infected pimple, needless to say it was caught much earlier than OP's

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I same thing goes for fingers. If it hurts for a long time and swells, get it checked. Lost the tip of my thumb from infection. Not cut 1/2

Off, eaten away.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had numerous MRSA infections, so many I've lost count actually, sucks. Never on my foot though. My eyelid scared the shite out of me..

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh sod that. The heel isn't nice because it's a struggle to walk or do anything much

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Once you get it into your blood stream, you are always acceptable to an infection, be really careful, especially if you get anymore tattoos.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can give you advice tattoo wise if you're going to get more. Let me know.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have one planned for a couple weeks. Pm me please

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

....ever the nurse, I giggles when I saw the distinct pattern of mepitel wound barrier on your heel.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Didn't notice on first viewing. Went back and checked for the dots.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's such a bad habit, I almost always notice them!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can you describe how it smelled?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn't notice a smell tbh, but then again I was in a lot of pain so smell wasn't on my mind

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't be ablw to describe it but my father was a surgeon and he says generally staph infections are the worst thing he has ever smelled

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't notice a smell but then again it was on my foot

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I was 13 I had mrsa about 7 times in 2 years

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That's no good :/

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

spread between me and my mother for about 4 years

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You probably only had it once and it just never got fully gone.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

more than likely. It wasn't fun started on my foot and went hogwild from there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome, now you have a secret coin pocket!!!

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

That's crazy how it starts so minor!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It was that minor for almost a week too

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well I'm glad I clicked this, the one day where i have weird pain in my heel.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry! At least you'll know what it is if it's this

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

MRSA infection on the foot is, hand on heart, what killed my grandfather. Entire foot was purple. Glad you caught it in time; it's not fun.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are a ton of things that can cause discoloration of the foot/feet, though. MRSA is one, but definitely not the most common in elderly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but that was the cause of death on the certificate.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

are you also a diabetic?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No I'm not

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: MRSA isn't even the worst version of staph out there. New evolutions are gaining resistance to vancomycin as well, we gon' die.

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 1

Just don't let it get in your blood. They you're royally fucked

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Bone infection is worse. Takes weeks of i.v. antibiotics.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sepsis is potentially lethal.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep, I was just lucky mine was an easier to treat strain

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

It's not exceptionally contagious though. It's basically a normal staphylococcus aureus, but with resistance against certain antibiotics.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Actually, that might be the nice part about them! If they work too well, it's hard for them to spread! :D

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, but think of all the money industrial farming companies made feeding antibiotics to their livestock!

All of them. No actually there was no visible wound that this could have gotten in whatsoever

8 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 1

My mother got something like this on her leg. Similarly, no entry wound, just spontaneous infection.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you walked bare feet outside? It's easy to get small founds at heel, bc it feels so little. BTDT, cut mine in half on a dog bone 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

2/2 I didn't notice it until I realized I was leaving bloody footsteps behind me. And it never hurt actually, just bled like a drain.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I got two of these near the family jewels a few years ago. Luckily I found a dermatologist quickly. Not a pleasant experience.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TBH. Foot seems a lot worse than thighs for this

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

man. jewels. *Nothing* like this should ever be near them. ever.
