The chair as I got it. $50 on craigslist

It's a vintage Herman Miller Eames lounge chair replica. Not exactly sure who made it, maybe Selig

The recline mechanism, 4 leg base and exposed bolts are all giveaways that it's a replica

Started by stripping off the original finish

Then a light sanding with 120 grit

Finished with natural danish oil. First coat is a flood coat, then a second coat wiped in. After that, wipe again and let dry

I sanded then sprayed the base with flat black spray paint. Masked off the areas that are to be left chrome

Assembled the plywood shells together

My first shot at reupholstering. I pulled the leather tight then stapled. It didn't look right to me

I did some research and the correct way, at least for this style chair, is it add the buttons first, then staple the edges. This gives the upholstery more texture allowing the buttons to be set deeper in the foam.
Stapled the cord for the buttons into the inner shells

Then stapled the outside. Started with the sides

Then pulled the corners

To get wrinkles out, create piping on the underside.

First two cushions done

Stapling the leather over the arms. I'm not too happy with how these turned out, but I have enough leather left over to redo them in the future.

Done

$50 chair
$20 staple gun and staples
$180 for 45 sq ft of leather
$4 spray paint
$15 stripper and danish oil
$269 total

Finished shot

Yes the room is a mess, it'll soon be stripped to the studs.

Finished shot first

I know I've seen this before. I can't find the original, but the other guy "found it on the side of the road" This guy is full of shit.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how the hell is that 45 sq ft of leather?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, nicely done! Did you use the 'old cushion stuffing' or did you make new, and if so with what material? Anyway, it really looks great!

$15 stripper? Where do you live?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it a real version? Or a knock off. Those are like 3k! Nice job. My in laws had one from the 60s that got destroyed in sandy :(

Also, the authentic Herman Miller Eames lounge chair doesn't have screws/nails on the side. It's molded thin sheets of lightweight veneer.

That happens to me all the time! Someone should invent some kind of slightly elevated surface I could put my snacks on! A man can dream..

Beautiful! Great job bringing this beauty back to life.

I have an Eames Lounge Chair replica that I bought from Manhattan Home Design and I love it because it's virtually identical to the original

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah? I once built a chair from Ikea using only most of the instructions. Your move, OP.

I even had some parts left over! Beat that!

Woah, we got ourselves a real Al Borland over here!

OMG! This is so beautiful and professional. Congrats! Restoration works are fascinating when such amazing results are achieved. Spectacular!

$270 with labor is a steal. A good Eames chair replica is $600+ easily. The real Eames chairs are like $1200. Good for you OP, I envy you.

A friend of mine owns a legit one of these. She spent like two grand on it but has to cover it in blankets because her cats will destroy it

Chair Is pretty nice tho

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is a pretty famous chair. My roommate won one that's worth close to 10k. You could probably sell it for a few thousand.

Same chair as the one in the corner of House's office.

Eames and Florence Knoll is y acquiring replicas from sites like Manhattan Home Design.

I thought the first pic was the "finished product" pic and this post was mocking all these diy posts :/

I used to have one of those chairs. I'm guessing at some point in the 80s, everybody had one of those chairs.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Thats because its an Eames chair. and Eames were considered gods of design, and Charles passed away in '78.

There were quite a few rip-offs but originals are and were very expensive.

Finished shot first eh

9 years ago | Likes 237 Dislikes 9

I prefer seeing the finished at the end, never understood why you'd want to see it conplete, before you see the process

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 7

It's the imgur way

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Some people don't care about the process and just want to see a neat chair

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

For me its more a case of does it turn out well enough for me to want to see it. Seen a lot of long, detailed posts with a meh finish

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There was a large debate about it on one of the DIY sections on reddit, and it led to putting the finished product first as the standard.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes there's 900 pictures.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its from too many "Hey i did a thing " posts and all you want to see is what they accomplished, on the mobile app

1) It's OK for a few photos like this and where you know from the beginning what the end goal is. But there are some DIYers that post 50 or

2) more progress pics and during the first 40 you only know what you are looking at if you have special insider knowledge of that kind of

Is Danish oil made from Danish people?

9 years ago | Likes 286 Dislikes 0

Yes, just like The Giver, it is made from all the old people and rejected babies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was disappointed after buying baby oil.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. The same as virgin oil...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I certainly hope so; otherwise, why use it.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

As a Dane I am terribly concerned.

No, its made of pastries

Yes it is.. Just like baby oil is made out of baby's..

It's made from the tears of everyone who's ever stepped on a Lego.

This need uptoves!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a dane, yes it is. We have something very similar to 'the hunger games' every year, where the oil is extracted from the losers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Makes sense to me. Whale oil comes from whales, Danish oil comes from Danish people. Or just from danishes?

Baby oil: for babies or made out of babies?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now that one I can see going either way. Same with baby powder. Once you get the oil out you dry and crush them to get powder? Not sure.
