Earlier this year, Indianapolis Motor Speedway tweeted this out for all to see. Its what 108 years of Track Surface that was laid down. This is a time capsule into the past. But what happened in that 108 years of history? 2 World wars and 20 US Presidents (Starting at Theodore Roosevelt).
But what about the track itself? Lets learn, shall we?
How do you map out what your race track looks like? Like this. Some chalk dust and a piece of land. This was when the idea of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was born. A 2.5 Mile oval, or rectangle, that would play host to the greatest race in the world.
The track would be built in 1909, the corners banked and the straightaways long. This was a street course like some races were used to racing. When the race track was built, it cost 3 million dollars, as of 2016, it was estimated that the race track this size, to build a 1:1 replica, it would cost you 73 Million dollars to build.
This Ticket? 1$.
2018's Ticket prices? 50$ to 205$
In the tracks 108 year history, only 101 races were held in its Open Wheel division. Racing would stop during World war 1 and 2, the track serving as a depot for supplies for the war effort.
This car is 108 years old. It won the first Indianapolis 500. The race, in previous years, wasn't 500 miles. It started at 100 miles, then 200, and climbed to 500. Why 500 miles? It seemed to be the distance an engine would last, Ray Harroun would win in that #32 machine. Sadly a few years later, he'd lose his life in a wreck at the same speedway.
So just how big is the course? Well, you can fit Vatican City, the White House, the Statue of Liberty, and the Taj Mahal inside comfortable.
As the years went on, the cars got faster, and more dangerous. Back in the early 1900's, Auto Racing was deadly, and many have perished chasing the 500 mile title.
This is the trophy they chase. Its got a carved face of every winner from 12 different nations. The latest face to join the cast was Takumo Sato, of Japan.
The Race track has been in operation since the early 1900's, and now here it has stood. The track is a historical monument.
The race track wasn't afraid to let it be known, to then Governor Mike Pence, that ALL people, no matter who, are welcomed to the track.

I hope you enjoyed this. Thank you.

That scale representation of the raceway is a bit... off... unless yer saying the windows on the whitehouse are 20 feet wide

No one goes to the indy or the brickyard anymore. Owners have screwed over the patrons for too long. $9 bottles of water on high heat days.

Swear this has been posted sooo many times today

I've lived in Indy all my life, and I've still not been to a 500. The qualifications and Pole Day are enough for now.

Send this to the front page. this is important history!

"Right, I'll sketch the design out in chalk, so you see where I'm coming from".... "But, it's just a big ov.." "I SAID, I'LL SKETCH IT OUT"
Mollygrubber
That has to be one of the coolest core samples ever taken.
forlackofabettername
Except for the pesky pothole left in the track

The first picture looks like a black pudding kebab (blood sausage)

So if the track is 2.5 miles around, and they go 500 miles in one race, there are 200 laps in a race? Thats a lot.
JonnyLightning683
A race lasts about 3 to 4 hours, depending on the accidents that happen during the race.

Thank you for actually posting some information and not just that same pictures for the 30th time

Great post! Thanks.

Without wishing to be offensive to one of the cornerstones of racing, it is not the Greatest Raceway in the world as its flyer proclaims 1/2
enybi
there are many better tracks in other countries that encourage far more exciting racing; Spa, Monza, Monaco, Suzuka, to name a few 2/2

Amen. I went in school on a field trip and it was a dream come true, I already have fav drivers but I felt a legend to merely be present.

If you only ever go to once race in your life, go to the infield at the 500. It’s an experience of a lifetime.
Seerion
You should try camping there on brickyard weekend. More beer and tits than you can imagine. From southern Indiana. Been 10 times. All great.
relpmeraggy
I’ve been to Santa Claus Indiana. Close to there?

101 open wheel races doesn’t sound right. Hasn’t F1 plus other open wheel classes races there?
CilantroGirl
Yes. The have the 400, Motocross, and the road course as well.
JonnyLightning683
I mostly focused on the Indy 500
whydouwanttoknow
It was a great read. I was just thinking about Indy lights, F1, and some other open wheel series. Interesting info and I hope to go someday
JonnyLightning683
I JUST posted one talking about all of those.
