Lightsaber Buying Guide

Below you'll find a sample of the many "Saber Smiths" available to purchase from. These are among the most popular out there and ALL of them are duel worthy, designed for full force combat. These 3 saber smiths are the current main contenders for the custom market.

There are MANY more out there. However most of them either specialize in complete custom work, or offer similar "off the shelf" sabers in a higher price bracket than these listed.

If you want to join up the community and find out more about lightsabers and the other companies you can check out

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1553748611608080/

https://www.facebook.com/groups/190917724397776/?fref=nf

All of these companies all share a few basic attributes and terms:

The blades are 1 inch outer diameter. Meaning you can use a blade from one brand on another brands hilt with zero problems. Some people prefer blades from one place and hilts from another.

The light comes from the HILT not the blade. This is one reason these are duel capable. If the LEDs were in the blade, which are known as string blades (a string of LEDs in the blade), its possible to pop them. Like the Black Series and Force FX. But you lose the "scolling" effect of the saber turning on and off by "extending" and "retracting". If you're familiar with the Force FX or black series, you know what I mean. Instead the light kind of fades in and out. Providing a similar, but different effect.

Some companies like Hamptons Hand Crafted Lightsabers have created duel capable string blades though. But those are a minority.

They all have the option of adding new or different "saber fonts" or sound effects. Some companies like SaberForge let you choose between 3 options for them to load onto your saber that can't be changed afterwards. Others like Vaders Vault let you load 6 different fonts to switch between on the fly after you download them from Saberfonts.com. Ultrasabers offers you a bunch for free to switch between as you please.

They can have Flash on Clash and Auxiliary effects added. Aside from brightness and fighting durability, the thing that separates them from the official licensed stuff like the Black Series or Force FX are these features.

Flash on Clash (FOC) means the blade will literally flash when you hit something with it.

Auxiliary effects include things like "Blaster Deflection", Lock up (Think of two lightsabers pushing against each other), motion activated "force powers" and so much more. It all depends on the sound board the smith uses. Much like video games, with preferred brands and arguments over those, the same drama exists for the different sound board brands.

RGB is also an option on almost every saber. RGB means you can change your sabers color on the fly using the RGB color scale. The dept and detail varies from company to company. For some, its even possible to assign a different sound font to each color and the saber will remember this.

Ultrasabers http://www.ultrasabers.com/

Ultrasabers is considered the gateway drug into the saber community. They offer a variety of hilts, from basic original designs to more detailed character based (Obi-Wan from Episode 1 for example) hilts. The accuracy of the character hilts vary. Some are very accurate while others work at a passing glance. They offer empty (no electronics), Stunt Sabers (Sabers without sound, just lights) and full featured sabers with sound. Their customer service can be spotty sometimes. You'll find conflicting stories where one group of people praise their service while others share their frustration. Ultrasabers has the fastest turn around time. Roughly two weeks from when you order your saber.

Ultrasabers

Ultrasabers is the cheapest on the market. Which is why some people tend to stick with them rather than branching out after buying from them. They allow you to fine tune every detail on your hilt, down to the button used to turn it on, in order for you to build one into your budget. However it sometimes comes off as being nickel and dimed for every little thing, especially when some things they charge you for are standard with other companies. And adding the features found in other companies, such as FOC and some Aux Effects, can quickly raise the price up to that OF the other companies sabers.

Ultrasabers

If you're trying to keep your budget down and not going with the Emerald Driver from them, at least get the Tri-Cree LED upgrade. Shown as a "Tri" color from the color menu. Its only $10 and honestly, without it or the ED, the brightness will leave you wanting. Tri-Cree LEDs are incredibly bright. The ED, aside from boosting the brightness of your saber, allows you to customize your saber and the color of your blade by plugging it into the computer and making changes in real time.

SaberForge http://www.saberforge.com/

SaberForge has been gaining massive popularity and seeing fast growth in the last few years. They mostly specialize in character based hilts and really have that market cornered in terms of affordable hilts based on movie props and comic designs. They have a basic line designed to compete with US cheapest offerings. But their real meat is in the elite line. Where hilts cost a little more but you're getting more detail on the hilt itself. They're basically Ultrasabers most direct competitor. They also offer, empty, stunt and complete hilts. SaberForge has one of the longer turn around times. Roughly 8 weeks from when you place your order. Their most expensive tier, the Hero Class, allows for a wide range of AUX effects and FOC.

SaberForge

I can't talk about SF without mentioning the controversy that surrounds them, as in all of it. While they have a huge cult following much like UltraSabers, ready to defend them at a moments notice, they're generally shunned from the larger Saber community. With a long list of grievances and an owner known for throwing temper tantrums, some people would call them an outright scam. Customer Service can again be spotty depending on who you talk to.

SaberForge

Despite all this, they're a popular option. Get their 12W+ option for maximum brightness. They only deal in heavy grade blades which are great for dueling, but won't let you take full advantage of the brightness of the 12w+ because of the blades extremely thick inner walls. Their heavy grade blade is known for being tough and taking quite a beating, but when it breaks it BREAKS. A common break on a normal saber blade is to have the tip pop off. Simply glue it back in. But the design of the V4 blade from SF means that when the tip pops off, it'll break the whole blade.

SaberForge https://www.etsy.com/shop/Saberforge?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=s

In general SaberForge hilts are slightly smaller than US, which makes them feel less clunky and more sword like. Check their Etsy page for exclusive test runs of saber designs, as well as a faster turn around time from your purchase date. The trade off is less options for customizing your saber. As these sabers are partially built, waiting to be finished based on a few less choices.

Vaders Vault http://vadersvault.com/

Vaders Vault started off as pure custom shop that only dealt in expensive one off's or highly detailed limited runs. They quickly earned a reputation as being one of the best in the biz. They recently switched gears into more off the shelf style models similar to US and SF. Their basic sabers, The Combat Class, are complete sabers that come fully featured with sound (as do ALL of their sabers) and are built from the ground up for dueling first and foremost. They don't have the hilt variety of the other guys yet, but they're newer in this aspect and still building their lineup. They have a longer lead time of around 12 weeks from your purchase date.

Vaders Vault

Priced competitively with over half of their combat class sabers marked at $350 and under. That puts them right in line with SaberForges Elite sabers ( Champion Class $355 with sound). They can often be cheaper depending on the hilt. Their Suncrusher LED is easily the brightest on the market and worth the $40 upgrade as it also includes FOC and other Aux effects on top of LED upgrade. Compared to SF which charges $30 for the 12w upgrade and nothing else.

Vaders VaultĀ uses a Shock Absorbant Chassis.

It keeps all the wiring and electronics nice and neat and most importantly safe while you're banging these things around at full force. They were one of the first in the industry to include this standard. Something few other brands, specifically the major well known ones, offer. VV only offers the complete saber experience. Lights and Sound included.

Priced competitively, you'll find most of their sabers cost right in line (often cheaper) with similar offerings from the likes of SaberForges Elite sabers with sound and Ultrasabers with Premium Obsidian sound. But you'll still get features unique to VV such as the chassis, high end sound card, and size of their hilts.

Vaders Vault

Another defining feature is the size. While other sabers can sometimes feel like you're holding a flash light, VV keeps its dimensions to that of an actual sword hilt. So that picking one up feels like a weapon rather than a toy. This is made possible by the tiny, but advanced, sound card they use. Of the three main saber smiths, VV is the only one where you'll find nothing but glowing reviews for both their company/customer service and the products they make.

Vaders Vault offers Mid and Heavy Grade blades, but they recommend sticking to mid, as do I. Go with the shine through tip when customizing your blade, over the mirrored option.

**Bonus** The Custom Saber Shop http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/default.aspx

One other option is to literally build your own. While there are many ways to do so from scratch, The Custom Saber Shop offers all the parts and even tutorials your heart desires. Utilizing a system known as MHS (Modular Hilt System), you can design and build your saber from prefab parts all designed to fit together in a simple manner.

The Custom Saber Shop

You can go from some of the parts pictured above to something like this. A complete saber made out of MHS parts. It can be as simple or complicated as you make it. But if its your first time working with electronics, start simple and practice. You don't want to jump straight to an advanced build and ruin a $200 sound board because you shorted it out.

At the end of the day, this short list is only scratching the surface of the many wonderful companies out there for your sabering needs.

Guys I'm sorry to say, ALL of these lightsabers look like fakes.

Saberforge has been known for bad business practices. I would thoroughly not recommend giving them your money

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about Hampton's Handcrafted Lightsabers?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I left out Hamptons because they're just a touch above this price range from what I remember of them. As I stated, this is a basic list

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks op, now i found something else to spend my hard-earned money on. What am i saying? I sit on Imgur all day at work

A cup of Earl Grey tea is a lot cheaper.

I'd like a *real* lightsaber. How many decades are we off from that?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holy shit that's cool. At the end of the video it's still spitting out fuel but not igniting immediately. I'd buy one of those.

ACTUALLY THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH SOUND SABERS. THAT POWER CONSUMPTION, JFC.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Disney's marketing group sure did a hell of a number on you young impressionable consumers.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 16

Either that or you're a hatewanking fanboy who is unaware of the history of custom sabers in the fan community...

The hobby has been around since the early 2000s. Before Lucas ever put out anything official of similar quality

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Kenner had one way back in the 80s. All plastic and was just a tuned plastic pipe that made sounds as you moved it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My boyfriend paid $100+ for a saber hilt through SaberForge's kickstarter back in July. He's STILL waiting for it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah like I said, SF is iffy

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He definitely needs to contact them. They will probably give a discount with free stuff for the horrible wait

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They've been contacted by other pledges multiple times but always with the response of "we're working on it"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea lost cause there. At this point I'll be happy to just get my saber. This is gonna be a one and done with saberforge. Damn shame.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here unfortunately. I've been waiting over a few months extra for mine and it's just not worth the wait and hassle for the price.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imgur: pages and pages on what light saber to buy, nothing on washing machines.

Hampton's Handcrafter Lightsabers is about to do the same type of thing, only the electronics will come pre-assembled. That's what sold me!

I'm going to have a few accent LEDs in mine so custom electronics are more the route I need to go. They offer modular wiring too.

I recommend talking to Hamptons custom led sabers. They give you full creative control and you can get exactly what you want. (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They are a good amount more expensive than other places but I am using it to create my design and not have to settle. Does engraving (2/?)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And even leather work. The one I'm making is close to 800 dollars but it's done in payments of 25% of a down payment and then over(2/?)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry meant 3/? For the previous one. Over a while the payments can float in and you get updates as its being made. Treat yo self. (4/4)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm anxiously awaiting his OST line. I love that the electronics will come already made and put together. It's what keeps me from CSS.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just ordered one from Vaders Vault about a week ago. The wait is going to kill me.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hey, I'm thinking about buying from VV when the flex comes back in stock

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I also ordered a lightsaber, but from ultrasabers. I'm so anxious for it to get here

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, I'm thinking about buying from VV when the flex comes back in stock. Does that come with the blade or not?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. They all come with blades.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you did this review, @OP. It's been hell waiting on Consumer Reports' Annual Lightsaber Roundup.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

isnt a jedi supposed to build his own lightsaber?

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Doesn't mean we can't ask for help.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

true. they would be teachers who would explain how they work and help to build it..but in the end its for the padawan to build his own saber

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you can with the bottom options.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whose to say there weren't Jedi who were better off staying away from power tools and were given premade chassis?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

since you need to use the force to create the lightsaber.... i think creating your own was meant as a test to show you had enough mastery to

That's a nice collection you have there. Half of those are at the top on my want list from ultrasabers.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah I found it searching for pics to help build the list. Awesome saber!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Sorry for that triple post. Damn mobile version. Yeah I sold off a few but I've got a few left.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Its not just you, Imgur was acting up. Theres a TON of triple posts. Seems fixed now.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

since you have the obi wan saber. I'm looking for a replica of it, would you recommend it from ultrasabers?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a bit bulky but not bad overall.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it worth buying?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd like a Mace Windu replica but I don't know how close they're allowed to do to it considering Samuel L. Jackson owns the character

VV again lol. They just released that one and it sold it out under 24 hours. All three versions.

I was saving money, but its so cool

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I place an order from VV, What accessories should I buy as well?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just get a Suncrusher Color (The $40 colors, thats a big upgrade thats more than worth it). Your blade length (I'm 5'6 and prefer 32 to 34)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And remember, the wait is a few months.

Genesis Custom Sabers! Rob does amazing work, pricey but amazing.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was wondering if that would show up! His work is incredible. LOVE the dragon pearl and old western themed ones.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I considered putting him on here but his prices are just above this bracket. I'd consider him slightly more advanced stuff.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I ordered a saberforge adaptive saber, they are FINALLY shipping this month. I'll put up a review of it on imgur if people want?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ultrasabers or the cheap SaberForge line

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do either of those do anything less than 150? I checked Saberforge and for a poor minor, they're a bit pricy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the cheapest ones are about $50 that come with no sound. with sound, the cheapest would be $160

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that is perfect, thank you good sir! mind sending me a link if you've got one handy?

Saberforge's Apprentice line are within your budget as well. $50 for just a hilt, $100 starting point for hilt, blade, and light.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've played around on the new custom shop for SF but it doesn't say how much my completed saber would be. Do I have to submit it first?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My saber from you guys was posted the other day! Can't wait.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that customer service has increased 10 fold. We have an entire department dedicated to it and the csr manager is my room mate.

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 2

I've been thinking about ordering the Fury saber. Happy to hear that. Makes my decision a little bit easier.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honest question here; with you saying the controversy is true is there a chance of repercussions? 'Phil' doesn't sound like the type of 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

guy who would like one of his employees admitting that the stuff is true. No disrespect intended.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1) Im honest and direct. Im not going to lie and say stuff didnt happen when it clearly did. The truth is it doesnt happen anymore.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) weve grown and with growth of a company we all have to maintain proffesionalism and try and keep good customer service and PR

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How much damage control do you have to do when Phil goes on another tangent?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

1) Luckily im in another shop at a different location doing customs so im not usually in the line of fire. But recently hasnt been alot

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2) out in the public like before its all internal. Theres bs in every job. One of my best friends was let go so that was hard. :(

I have to say it wasn't the best customer service but at least I was able work something out with them. But my biggest complaint is it 2/3

Just one question, can you hit stuff with them without them breaking

There is a new sabersmith in Singapore. They are named Sabermach. Balanced saber, as bright as SF 12W, durable, very sleek design. Check em!
