Day # whatever of me trying to change people’s minds about spiders

Jan 27, 2026 4:45 PM

Introducing my third mom of the season, Nurse Joy! And yes, all of her slings will be named after Pokémon lol. Her coloration is straight chocolate and I’m obsessed! She’s also an apalachicola, which means she’s HUGE (as you can see from comparing her to my finger). Apalachicolas are my favorite locality to work with, so I’m very excited for her clutch! They hatched in December and just started leaving the nest

If you watch the YouTube video, it says “first” but you guys have already met Toasty and Circus :) I’m going to start doing long form content this weekend- do you gus want to guess what my first subject it going to be?! I’ll even send a lil spider themed gift pack (no real spiders, promise) if you actually guess it!

MOST VIRAL EDIT: Only one person has guessed?! You guys did not understand the assignment here

Guess for first long form: how to determine sex

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh goodness that’s short form. Regals are sexually dimorphic meaning you can easily tell the difference just by looking at them lol

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You will fail. Not sorry.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

My following shows differently :) But thanks for throwing in your opinion. Block the spider tag and you’ll never have to see my posts again

Thanks! Longform content coming soon :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I apologize for the confusion 🤣

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You gucci 😂

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aw, the pattern on her abdomen looks like the cap of an acorn!

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aww it does!! I never noticed! I’ll have to check if it’s still looks like that now that she’s not a balloon ready to pop

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yay, Pokémon names!!!!!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m so excited lmao

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Spiders can be cute too and I have no problem with them.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Spiders definitely CAN be cute! But even the not “cute” ones can be fascinating! Tarantulas often do a happy dance when they catch their food; orb weavers are amazing architects; and ogre face spiders/net casters have the coolest method of hunting!

Nurse Joy FTW +1

I can’t wait to name her babies. I’ll let you guys help me pick :)

These guys always remind of the novel Children of Time. Highly recommend if you're into harder sci-fi and spiders

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Read it! Loved the jumping spider scenes; the ship parts were meh. I understand the juxtaposition between a rising and falling empire but I just didn’t care enough? Lol

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why her... posterior, is big?
Bebbes?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

“Abdomen” is the correct term :) The other half of her is called her cephalothorax. Yay learning new vocab! Lol

And yes, she’s a big spider but her abdomen looking full to bursting is because she was carrying eggs

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, I know 'bout the nomenclature!
I was bein' funny!

The "butt" of insects and arachnids is the abdomen!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She got booty

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She’s back to normal size now lol. She was just full of eggs!

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She is cute because she's the size of a petri dish. The ones that run like the fear of the deep and are as big as an eldritch horror manifested are an issue. Also, some people attract spiders like people attract mosquitoes.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m one of those people- I attract spiders everywhere lol. Also she’s nowhere the size of a Petri dish lol (I have a tarantula that is, though!). I agree that super fast spiders, like wolf and huntsman, are extra freaky BUT they’re still a super important part of ecosystems! And eating those mosquitos

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...all of her slings will... Is slings shorthand for Spiderlings?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do you break it to a spider that their butt looks big?

1 month ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

She’s not big she’s preggers! Or she was; her babies are just started to leave the nest! :)

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Oh God.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What? That’s exciting! It’s new life! It’s adorable!

Plus they’re in enclosures specifically designed for slings (baby spiders) so even the smallest can’t escape. Plus they come out slowly and in little bunches; they don’t just spontaneously explode everywhere like some spiders lol

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You haven't changed my mind about jumping spiders: I love them! They're good spoods.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The title isn’t for you but the content is! Check out my YouTube channel- I’m going to start doing some long form content!

i hear spiders are good at IT. they're really good web designers

Hehehehehe

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is one big booty!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She was gravid, or carrying eggs at the time! Her babies are i1/i2s now and will be emerging the nest soon!

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've subscribed to your YT channel, but since I watch the 'shorts' here... Will you eventually make longer content for YT?

Not complaining, and most certainly not asking you to change your plans on my account; just curious.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes, I am going to start doing longer form content (starting this weekend actually!). I just wanted something familiar HERE to start getting traction over THERE for proof of concept. Since at least some people are subscribed now, I’m willing to put in the extra effort! Lol

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yay! And good planning, you. Looking forward to future posts here AND on YT! <3

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I try to be savvy about this stuff but it was actually another imgurian who gave me the idea to do it that way!

Just know- ain’t nobody got time for massive editing. Y’all are about to get a very candid Medusa because I’m filming things in one or two takes and that’s it 😂

Would you guys ever want me to go live so you can ask questions in real time? Idk how many followers I have to have to do that on YT. I could on Instagram though

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

PS: Savvy is, in part, knowing when and how to use feedback and info given by others. Being able to accept ideas that are not our own. It's a good thing we don't all have the same info, the same knowledge, the same expertise... even better that we can share with and help each other. That's savvy. You ARE savvy.

So there. Nyah. =-)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer unedited, candid footage over TV-perfect content. Like YT used to be, long ago. (sigh)

Live shows... I'm rarely up for that, either because of time or energy constraints, but I'll bet you'd get some folks participating once you decide to do that. My artist friend does various "Painters Breakfast", "Painters Lunch" and "Paint With Me" live shoots. Even if no one shows up, he still has some good content to post. Candid. Thoughtful. Lovely. <3

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m glad that style is appreciated! Because I can’t do super perfect and edited

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First long content - how to care for slings?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 10: molting to maturity. Becoming sexually mature. Females can change color DRASTICALLY and have a shinny “bellybutton” on their abdomen. Males have little boxing gloves at the end of their pedipalps which hold sperm packets

Step 11: the whole cycle starts all over /gallery/day-whatever-of-me-trying-to-change-people-s-minds-about-spiders-s854dJC

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OHHHHH. It has been a long day and I am, like my name implies, high 🤪 I thought you were asking for the whole life cycle lmao not suggesting it for the first long content. I *was* thinking “huh. This is kinda weird coming from @Froggylvr77 they comment on every post…” but was just like whatevs, here you go! Lmao sorry

Good guess but nope! Gotta be something more fun and funny to hook people with the first video. There’s already good videos on that (I helped my friend Sarah with hers!)

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here is an excellent life cycle video by one of my best friends in the hobby. She actually has LOTS of great education videos for beginners or answering frequently asked questions! I highly recommend giving her a chance :)

**Anytime someone mentions Zo or Zovariums in their spider content, that’s me**

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ohh that’s a great question! What age are we talkin? Like “newborn”/baby babies or like the age when you would adopt them?

Oh I already have those! Wait one

/gallery/new-year-s-day-whatever-of-me-trying-to-change-people-s-minds-about-spiders-DpXWS2y Step 3: molting to i2 and being active in the nest (I accidentally pulled this next because I didn’t know it existed, so they’re emerging a little early)

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

nest*

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 8: i8/i9. Teenagers. Playful, good time to bond, perfect age to get a spider if you’re new to the hobby :) All colors are brightly portrayed by females but all males will be black and white by this stage (sometimes they have recessive gens and look different when they’re i4-i7)

/gallery/day-whatever-of-me-trying-to-change-people-s-minds-about-spiders-HB8ztVD

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 5: i4 I don’t shave pictures of i4s right now but will soon! Beginning to get a little color, especially stripes on legs and a dot on their head. Still hunting as a pack but not scavenging anymore.

Step 6: i5/i6. Start getting color, begin eating bigger meals. Have to be separated so they don’t cannibalize Also the most dangerous molts

/gallery/day-whatever-of-me-trying-to-change-people-s-minds-about-spiders-bQsQPRm

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Step 7: i6/i7 start developing much more color, are whined off of fruit flies. This is when I begin adopting mine out

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have changed my mind about jumping spiders, but I am in doubt that you can change my mind about wolf spiders and huntsman spiders...

1 month ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Think of wolf spiders are just bigger, lankier versions of jumping spiders. They’re pretty chill. (If you’re not an Aussie, I doubt you’ll ever encounter a huntsman, but I admit that I would probably freak out if I saw one of those in person, even knowing they’re harmless and me not being particularly afraid of spiders myself.)

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Huntsman live in the southeast of the US as well. Not as big but we have them too

And wolf spiders are literally not anything like jumping spiders, sorry.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think he meant that they don’t hang out in webs but hunt prey like jumping spiders. I get them frequently in my basement in the fall and when we had work done, I told them not to kill them as I preferred the spiders to what they weee eating down there. One of the workmen agreed with me.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wolf spiders are active hunters like jumpers too, though

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay so real talk: wolf spiders intimidate me too. I have traumatic memories associated with them. I’m trying really hard to face my own fears and my goal is actually to own one one day.

Huntsman are definitely intimidating because they are FAST. And the leggy-neas causes discomfort. But just because something causes you to feel a certain way doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a creature for what it does- they’re very important pest control!

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

CLARIFICATION: I’m not arguing that wolf spiders are dangerous or anything or the sort! I’m sorry if that’s what was implied.

I lived in a 110 year old farmhouse with my abusive ex husband in the middle of nowhere. LOTS of wild spiders everywhere, cool.

Until he shoved me to the floor once and one crawled across my face. That’s the traumatic memory. The spider didn’t do anything except try to get away; I just associate them with physical abuse

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Huntsman spiders (Australian ones) are harmless. They are just big and scary looking, but they're lovers, not fighters. This from an avowed arachnophobe.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Our huntsman are harmless too! But they don’t get nearly as big as yours!

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, you’re the expert, but I’ve moved wolf spiders outside in my bare hands numerous times without any problems. Maybe all of them are not so chill. My experience, though, hasn’t been negative.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yikes! I don’t blame you. Glad he’s an ex.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately I’m still tied to him because we share a kid (barely 😒). He still tries to make my life miserable. I left him and he’ll make me pay for it the rest of my life

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op - I’m going to table a motion for you to just call it Day #69 for the rest of eternity. We all know roughly how long it’s been, and you’re doing Shelob’s work with great success. Just pick a number and we will roll with it.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s actually closer to day 730 or something lmao

Gotta keep consistency in titles or people might think it’s a knock off post or not be able to find it

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah man. You’ve been doing this shit since day, so put down any worry about ‘people think…’. We don’t. More spiders.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m still not calling it day 69 lmao
